KARACHI – Three suspects arrested in the murder case of Dr Akash were killed after their own accomplices allegedly opened fire during a police raid in Karachi, the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) said on Thursday.
According to the SIU, police carried out a raid in Umar Brohi Goth, Gulshan-e-Maymar, based on information provided by the arrested suspects to apprehend other members of the gang. During the operation, the fleeing suspects allegedly opened fire on the police team, injuring one police officer.
The SIU claimed that the three arrested suspects were fatally shot by bullets fired by their own accomplices during the exchange of fire.
Dr Akash was killed on July 13 outside a bank in Karachi’s Clifton area when armed robbers opened fire during a robbery. The suspects escaped with Rs2.5 million after snatching part of the Rs5 million the victim had withdrawn from the bank.
Police had earlier informed the court that the arrested suspects were allegedly involved in several bank-related robberies and cash-snatching incidents. Investigators also claimed that an unidentified woman was involved in planning or facilitating the robbery.
Police said they are further investigating the matter.
