KARACHI – A fire broke out at the headquarters of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) on MA Jinnah Road on Tuesday, completely destroying the office of Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab.
The rescue officials said that the fire originated in a kitchen adjacent to the mayor’s office and rapidly spread to the surrounding portion of the building.
The blaze intensified within a short period, engulfing the mayor’s office and causing extensive damage to the premises.
The incident triggered concern among officials and staff members present at the KMC headquarters as emergency teams were called to the scene to prevent the fire from spreading to other sections of the building.
Rescue authorities said two fire tenders were dispatched to the KMC headquarters to tackle the blaze. Firefighters took part in the operation and managed to bring the fire under control, preventing it from causing further damage to other parts of the building.
The mayor’s office, however, was completely gutted in the incident. Furniture, office equipment and other items inside the premises were reportedly damaged or destroyed by the fire.
No casualties have been reported so far in connection with the incident.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
The local authorities are expected to investigate the incident to determine how the fire started and whether any safety-related issue contributed to its rapid spread.
The KMC headquarters is one of Karachi’s key municipal offices and houses several administrative departments responsible for managing civic affairs in the city.
The officials said a detailed assessment of the damage would be carried out after the situation was fully brought under control.
