What we know so far"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>While his lawyer claims that the PTI ally was arrested, the Rawalpindi police have denied having him in custody.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Almost 15 days after he was arrested from his residence in Rawalpindi, whereabouts of Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid remain unknown.<\/p>\n<p>According to the politician\u2019s lawyer, Rashid was in the custody of the Rawalpindi police. However, the latter has denied these claims.<\/p>\n<p>The Lahore High Court\u2019s (LHC) Rawalpindi bench has ordered the police to locate the PTI ally\u2019s whereabouts, directing the law enforcement agency to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1778098\">make an all-out efforts<\/a> for his recovery. Further proceedings are set to resume tomorrow (Monday).<\/p>\n<p><em>Dawn.com<\/em> traces developments pertaining to Rashid\u2019s arrests and re-arrests throughout the year.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"january\" href=\"#january\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>January<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Jan 30: LHC directs ETPB to de-seal Lal Haveli residence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rashid\u2019s renowned Lal Haveli residence was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1734404\">sealed<\/a> by the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) a day after it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1734369\/etpb-disputes-sheikh-rashids-ownership-claims-of-lal-haveli\">found out<\/a> that the ownership documents of one of its eight units were fake.<\/p>\n<p>Later the same day, the LHC\u2019s Rawalpindi bench <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1734404\">directed<\/a> the board to immediately de-seal the residence after the judge reprimanded an ETPB administrator for not presenting a clear stance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jan 31: Rashid given last chance to appear before police<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The capital police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1734606\">issued a final warning<\/a> to the former interior minister to appear before the police in connection with a complaint over his alleged objectionable remarks against former president Asif Ali Zardari.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint was filed fater AML chief alleged that Zardari recruited terrorists to murder PTI Chairman Imran Khan.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"february\" href=\"#february\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>February<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Feb 2: Rashid arrested; Islamabad police granted 2-day physical remand<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An Islamabad court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1734913\">granted<\/a> police Rashid\u2019s two-day physical remand, hours after the politician was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1734889\">arrested<\/a> in connection with his remarks against Zardari.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1733540\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>His arrest had come amid a raft of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1734833\/police-register-sedition-case-against-another-former-pti-mna\">legal moves<\/a> against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1733540\">PTI leaders<\/a> and their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1734743\">allies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Similar cases against him were also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1735121\">registered<\/a> at the Murree and Karachi\u2019s Mochko police stations and Balochistan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1735423#:~:text=removed%20the%20handcuffs.-,FIR,-in%20Hub\">Hub<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1735641#:~:text=leader%20in%20Balochistan%E2%80%99s-,Lasbela,-as%20per%20his\">Lasbela<\/a> districts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feb 6: IHC stays registration of multiple FIRs against Rashid<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Islamabad High Court (IHC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1735747\">issued a stay order<\/a> against the registration of first information reports (FIRs) against Rashid across the country.<\/p>\n<p>It also stopped his handover to the Sindh and Balo\u00adchistan police in the cases registered against him over his alleged objectionable remarks about Zardari.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feb 8: Murree police granted 1-day transit remand<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the IHC had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1735641\">ordered<\/a> police to not take further action against Rashid in the Sindh and Balochistan cases, two days later, a sessions court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1736025\">granted<\/a> the Murree police his one-day transit remand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feb 16: IHC grants bail<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After a session court had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1735846\">rejected<\/a> his bail post-arrest plea <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1736196\">twice<\/a>, the IHC finally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1737459\">approved<\/a> the same a week later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feb 25: ACE launches fresh probe against Rashid<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Lahore Anti-Corruption Establishment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1739130\">launched<\/a> a fresh probe against Rashid and Farhat Shahzadi, a close friend of the PTI chairman\u2019s wife, in inquiries pending against them to determine whether they committed money laundering or not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>May 27: Govt cancels Rashid\u2019s diplomatic passport<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a part of the state\u2019s crackdown on the PTI and its leaders in the aftermath of May 9 violence \u2014 when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1752254\">protests<\/a> broke out across the country against former premier Imran Khan\u2019s first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1751782\">arrest<\/a> \u2014 the government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1756325\">cancelled<\/a> the diplomatic passports of the former interior minister, as well as nine high-profile PTI leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The list excluded those former members of the PTI chief\u2019s cabinet who had said their goodbyes to the party, though it was not immediately clear whether they also held diplomatic passports or not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>May 28: Rashid vows unwavering support for Imran<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In light of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1754479\">witch-hunt<\/a> launched against the PTI, with many notable leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1755610\">quitting the party<\/a>, Rashid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1756401\/will-keep-standing-with-imran-despite-threats-vows-sheikh-rashid\">vowed<\/a> he would keep supporting Imran, even if at the risk of facing death.<\/p>\n<p>The former interior minister alleged that raids were being conducted at the houses of his sisters, brothers and passed-away mother.<\/p>\n<p><strong>May 30: Rashid responds to NAB notice in Al-Qadir Trust case<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The AML chief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1756830\">submitted<\/a> a response to the notice issued by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1751790\">Al-Qadir Trust case<\/a> \u2014 the same in which Imran had been arrested.<\/p>\n<p><strong>May 31: Police allegedly raids Rashid\u2019s home<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The PTI ally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1757039\">alleged<\/a> that some 80-90 people, including Rangers, Islamabad police, and others \u201cdressed in civil clothes\u201d raided his home forcefully during the early hours of the day, as well as tortured his houseworkers.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"june\" href=\"#june\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>June<\/h2>\n<p><strong>June 4: Rashid laments further police raids<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once again, the AML chief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1757913\">claimed<\/a> that Islamabad police\u2019s Elite Force personnel beat his staff during a raid at his house at 12am and forcibly extracted statements that they were not tortured during the previous May 31 raid.<\/p>\n<p>He also alleged that in a second incident, a \u201cforce clad in plain clothes\u201d tortured his employees at his Lal Haveli residence in Rawalpindi at 4am.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"september\" href=\"#september\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>September<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Sept 17: Rashid arrested: lawyer, nephew<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sardar Abdul Raziq, the AML chief\u2019s lawyer told <em>Dawn.com<\/em> that the politician was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1776399\">arrested<\/a> from his residence in Rawalpindi by \u201cmen clad in plain clothes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He claimed that Rashid\u2019s nephew Sheikh Shakir and houseworker Sheikh Imran had also been arrested. Raziq further said the former interior minister had been moved to an \u201cundisclosed location\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, in a video message, the AML leader\u2019s nephew Sheikh Raashid Shafique said his uncle, along with Shakir and Imran, was arrested by the Punjab police from Bahria Town Phase III in Rawalpindi and their current whereabouts were unknown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth the Islamabad and Punjab police have told the high courts in writing that Sheikh Rashid is not proclaimed in any case,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Condemning the May 9 violence, Shafique requested the higher courts to take notice of the arrest and find out where his uncle was taken. \u201cWe will fight the legal battle and have always indulged in politics of principles,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1776518\">According to Raziq<\/a>, Rashid was initially not nominated in the FIR registered with the Kohsar police in Islamabad in connection with a midnight protest on May 9 against Imran\u2019s arrest but his name was later included in the FIR.<\/p>\n<p>However, senior police officials in Islamabad denied detaining the AML chief.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sept 18: LHC moved for Rashid\u2019s production order<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sheikh Amir Shafique, another nephew of Rashid, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1776619\">approached<\/a> the LHC\u2019s Rawalpindi bench seeking directives to the police to produce his uncle, a brother and two servants \u2014 adding Sajid\u2019s name to the list of detainees \u2014 in the court.<\/p>\n<p>Former MNA Sheikh Rashid Shafique also said the AML chief had not been produced in any court even after more than 24 hours nor his relatives were informed about his whereabouts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sept 21: Authorities seal Lal Haveli residence<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1777124\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The row over the property\u2019s ownership resurfaced when authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1777082\/authorities-seal-sheikh-rashids-lal-haveli-residence-in-rawalpindi\">once again sealed<\/a> the Lal Haveli residence. An ETPB official stated that the building\u2019s registry had been cancelled after proceedings but clarified that it was not fake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sept 22: Rawalpindi police denies arresting AML chief<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The LHC\u2019s Rawalpindi bench <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1777276\">took up the plea<\/a> against Rashid\u2019s arrest and summoned Rawalpindi Regional Police Officer (RPO) Syed Khurram Ali on September 26.<\/p>\n<p>During the hearing, Additional Attorney General (AAG) Malik Siddique Awan presented City Police Officer (CPO) Khalid Hamdani\u2019s report to the court which stated that Rashid was neither in their custody nor had he been arrested by the Rawalpindi police.<\/p>\n<p>The report added that the case fell under the Islamabad police\u2019s jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p>The court found the CPO\u2019s reply unsatisfactory and ordered the Rawalpindi RPO to appear in a personal capacity in the next hearing on September 26.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sept 26: Rashid not in police custody, court told<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the AML chief\u2019s counsel Raziq argued before the LHC\u2019s Rawalpindi bench that his client was arrested by the city\u2019s police, the police denied having the politician in their custody.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1778098\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Subsequently, the court directed the police to locate Rashid\u2019s whereabouts and asked the law enforcement agency to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1778098\">make an all-out effort<\/a> for his recovery. Further proceedings were later adjourned till October 2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sept 29: Whereabouts of Rashid still not known: nephew<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a video statement on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Shafique reiterated that he still did not know where his uncle, brother and the houseworker were.<\/p>\n<p>He also claimed that he had \u201crepeatedly requested\u201d Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa and LHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq to take notice of the matter.<\/p>\n<p>As in <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShkhRasheed\/status\/1705459182412173714\">previous<\/a> <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShkhRasheed\/status\/1704751610742632614\">videos<\/a>, he reiterated that they were \u201cready to face the cases\u201d filed against them and once again demanded that the leaders be presented before the relevant courts.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While his lawyer claims that the PTI ally was arrested, the Rawalpindi police have denied having him in custody.
