{"id":93752,"date":"2025-05-07T23:17:17","date_gmt":"2025-05-07T23:17:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/khawaja-asif-warns-of-nuclear-risk-amid-pakistan-india-conflict-the-express-tribune\/"},"modified":"2025-05-07T23:17:17","modified_gmt":"2025-05-07T23:17:17","slug":"khawaja-asif-warns-of-nuclear-risk-amid-pakistan-india-conflict-the-express-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/khawaja-asif-warns-of-nuclear-risk-amid-pakistan-india-conflict-the-express-tribune\/","title":{"rendered":"Khawaja Asif warns of nuclear risk amid Pakistan-India conflict | The Express Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<figure class=\"flex items-center text-center\"><figcaption class=\"text-3 font-sans uppercase mr-3 whitespace-no-wrap\"><span class=\"ls-art\">Listen\u00a0to\u00a0article<\/span><\/figcaption><audio class=\"h-5 w-60 sm:w-80 rounded-none\" preload=\"metadata\" controlslist=\"noplaybackrate nodownload\" id=\"tts\" controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.tribune.com.pk\/attachments\/speech_20250507195150857-WiT1c.mp3\"\/><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has issued a stark warning that rising tensions with India could push the region dangerously close to nuclear conflict, as Islamabad reels from a deadly cross-border assault it has labelled a &#8220;blatant act of war.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In an interview to <em>Geo News<\/em> on Wednesday, Asif cautioned that the risk of escalation was \u201cvery real,\u201d following India\u2019s airstrikes on Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir earlier in the\u00a0morning.<\/p>\n<p>The coordinated attacks targeted at least six sites, including mosques and infrastructure projects, killing 31 civilians and injuring at least 71, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis region has faced nuclear threats before \u2014 and we could be headed toward another strategic standoff,\u201d the minister said. \u201cIndia is going through a major internal crisis, and its aggression is putting the entire region\u2019s peace and security at stake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also addressed the situation in the National Assembly, condemning what he described as India\u2019s \u201cspineless assault in the dead of night.\u201d He praised the armed forces for their swift and decisive retaliation. \u201cWith the help of Allah and the prayers of our people, our military gave a befitting response,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In a significant military development, Pakistan\u2019s armed forces\u00a0shot down five Indian fighter jets in retaliatory strikes. According to ISPR, the downed aircraft included three Rafales, one Su-30MKI, and a MiG-29. Additionally, Pakistan reportedly destroyed an Indian brigade headquarters, multiple checkposts, and a drone.<\/p>\n<p>Director-General ISPR Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry confirmed that all Pakistan Air Force (PAF) jets returned safely after engaging Indian targets.
