{"id":92100,"date":"2025-03-25T14:41:13","date_gmt":"2025-03-25T14:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/bhc-allows-mahrang-baloch-to-meet-relatives-in-jail-as-gwadar-other-coastal-cities-observe-shutter-down-strike\/"},"modified":"2025-03-25T14:41:13","modified_gmt":"2025-03-25T14:41:13","slug":"bhc-allows-mahrang-baloch-to-meet-relatives-in-jail-as-gwadar-other-coastal-cities-observe-shutter-down-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/bhc-allows-mahrang-baloch-to-meet-relatives-in-jail-as-gwadar-other-coastal-cities-observe-shutter-down-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"BHC allows Mahrang Baloch to meet relatives in jail as Gwadar, other coastal cities observe shutter-down strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>The Balochistan High Court (BHC) on Tuesday allowed imprisoned rights activist DR Mahrang Baloch to meet with her relatives after the Balochistan National Party-Mengal held strikes and issued a call to support the recent protests by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) against a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1899479\/tear-gas-water-cannon-employed-to-disperse-baloch-yakjehti-committee-protesters-in-quetta\">police crackdown<\/a> and arrests of its leaders.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday evening, the police used tear gas and water cannons, and fired blank shots to disperse BYC protesters, who had staged a sit-in on the Sariab Road near the University of Balochistan, against alleged enforced disappearances, including its leader Bebarg Baloch. The provincial government and the BYC had reported casualties on their sides as a result of each other\u2019s actions, with the activist group claiming three dead and 13 others suffering injuries and the police saying around 10 of their personnel were hurt.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:250px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1900069\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The situation further escalated when BYC chief organiser Mahrang was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1899608\/byc-leadership-arrested-over-civil-hospital-violence-balochistan-govt-spokesperson-rind\">arrested<\/a> in the early hours of Saturday and was booked under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1899910\/mahrang-other-byc-leaders-face-terror-charges\">terror charges<\/a> along with 150 others. Responding to BYC\u2019s call, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1899689\/parts-of-blochistan-shut-as-police-crack-down-on-byc\">shutter-down strikes<\/a> were staged over the weekend in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1899910\/mahrang-other-byc-leaders-face-terror-charges#:~:text=under%20MPO%20provisions.-,Protests%2C%20blockades,-After%20the%20crackdown\">various cities<\/a> of Balochistan \u2014 including Quetta, Panjgur, Kalat, Turbat, Mastung, Kharan, Chaghi, Dalbandin and Dhadar.<\/p>\n<p>A two-member BHC comprising Justices Rozi Khan Barrech and Shaukat Ali Rakhshani presided over a hearing today on a petition by Mahrang\u2019s sister Nadia Baloch against the imprisonment and mentioning various state officials and authorities as respondents.<\/p>\n<p>Petitioner\u2019s counsel Imran Baloch requested the court to issue a directive to the government to provide details of the cases against Mahrang.<\/p>\n<p>The bench accepted the petition for hearing and issued notices to the parties. It also allowed one week\u2019s time to provide details of the cases at the request of the Balochistan advocate general and prosecutor general.<\/p>\n<p>The short order, a copy of which is available with <em>Dawn.com<\/em>, said the petitioner\u2019s counsel had contended that Mahrang was arrested under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance \u201cwithout any reasoning,\u201d which was a violation of constitutional articles 15, 16 and 19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoint needs consideration,\u201d the order said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter admission of the petition, petitioner\u2019s counsel filed an application with a request therein that the relatives of the detenue and her counsel may be allowed to meet her at District Jail Hudda Quetta. It is worthwhile to mention here that it is the right of every prisoner to meet with his\/her counsel or relatives. Therefore, the application is accepted and the detenue\u2019s counsel and her relatives are allowed to meet her,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>However, Nadir alleged in a <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NadiaBaloch99\/status\/1904499883119149224\">post<\/a> on X that despite the high court\u2019s order, jail authorities stopped her for three hours \u201cblatantly violating the high court\u2019s order\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMahrang\u2019s life and health are in serious danger as she is being held among dangerous, hardcore criminals. When she resisted this, she was threatened of solitary confinement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurveillance cameras have been installed directly in front of her prison cell and washroom, and she is subjected to constant 24-hour monitoring. She has no privacy, even in personal matters and has reported that her clothing choices are also being observed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe food provided is extremely unhygienic, and we fear it is contaminated. As a result, both Mahrang and Bebo have fallen ill. Despite this, they are not being treated. They are also not being treated as political prisoners and are being denied basic rights,\u201d Nadir alleged.<\/p>\n<p>She appealed appeal to Quetta\u2019s legal fraternity and human rights organisations to take immediate action to ensure Mahrang and Bebo\u2019s safety and a fair trial.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, all businesses, banks, shops and petrol pumps in Gwadar were closed to protest against the arrests and cases registered against all BYC women leaders, including Dr Mahrang, Bebo Baloch and Sammi Deen Baloch.<\/p>\n<p>Thw protest came a day after the Karachi police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1900028\/police-disperse-byc-protesters-in-karachi-take-6-people-into-custody\">detained<\/a> Sammi and several others during a protest against the recent arrests of BYC leadership and a crackdown on its Quetta sit-in.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">A strike observed in Pasni on Tuesday in response to the Balochistan National Party-Mengal\u2019s call \u2014 Photo by Sajid Noor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>A similar situation was witnessed in Ormara, a city 270 kilometres away from Gwadar, where a complete shutter-down strike by the traders\u2019 association was under way. Shops were also closed in Pasni, another coastal town 142km from Gwadar.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">A strike observed in Pasni on Tuesday in response to the Balochistan National Party-Mengal\u2019s call \u2014 Photo by Sajid Noor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Separately, BNP-M president Sardar Akhtar Mengal announced a long march on March 28 against the arrest of BYC leaders.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sakhtarmengal\/status\/1904256043774837004\">post<\/a> on X, Mengal said, \u201cI announce a long march from Wadh to Quetta, against the arrest of our daughters and the desecration of our mothers and sisters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will lead this march myself, and invite all Baloch brothers and sisters, young and old, to join us in this march,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>He also wrote: \u201cThis is not just a matter of the arrest of our daughters, it is a question of our national dignity, our honour, and our very existence.
