Washington, D.C., March 21, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Thurgood Marshall College Fund<\/a> (TMCF) and its Board of Directors<\/a> recently hosted a CEO Impact Awards event in Charlotte for the second time in two years to honor the influence and actions of an outstanding role model to students at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Nearly $500,000 was raised during the event, thanks in part to a verbal committee by the evening\u2019s honoree.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

The event honored Eugene A. Woods<\/a>, chief executive officer of Advocate Health<\/a>, for his dedication to HBCUs and their students.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re so grateful for Gene\u2019s leadership, impact and generosity,\u201d Dr. Harry L. Williams<\/a>, president & CEO of TMCF, said. \u201cSo many lives have benefited from his commitment.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n

In his remarks, Woods delivered a message of hope and drew inspiration from TMCF\u2019s namesake, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. <\/p>\n

\u201cA lesson to be drawn from Justice Marshall is that hope, in and of itself, is necessary but insufficient. Hope needs not just our hearts, but the action of our hands and unwavering courage \u2014to convert it into meaningful, sustainable progress,\u201d he said. \u201cJustice Marshall believed in the right of every American\u2014 to receive a quality education, and he turned that hope into reality with his action, in successfully litigating Brown v. Board of Education<\/i> at the Supreme Court.\u201d <\/p>\n

Woods also said he was extending an internship offer to one of the event\u2019s student speakers, TaRetta Bright, a junior health services management major at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

The event was co-chaired by Robert A. Engel<\/a>, chairman of Banking for Wells Fargo<\/a>\u2019s Corporate & Investment Bank; Jeffrey J. \u201cJB\u201d Brown, president of Hendrick Automotive Group<\/a>; and the Honorable Harvey B. Gantt, former mayor of Charlotte.
