In a significant development, the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) on Wednesday approved the appointment of senior lawyer Ahsan Bhoon as a member of the JCP for a two-year term.<\/p>\n

The decision was taken during a PBC meeting held at the Supreme Court in Islamabad under the chairmanship of Mansoor Usman Awan. The huddle was attended by central and provincial members of the council.<\/p>\n

The appointment follows the resignation of former JCP member Akhtar Hussain, who stepped down citing controversies surrounding recent appointments in the higher judiciary. A total of 19 members participated in the voting process.<\/p>\n

Bhoon was elected with a majority vote, securing 14 votes in favour, while four members opposed his appointment. Advocate Munir Kakar abstained from voting.<\/p>\n

Bhoon will represent the PBC for a two-year term in the commission, which plays a crucial role in judicial appointments across the country.<\/p>\n

Sources indicated that four members – Advocate Shafqat Chauhan, Shahab Sarki, Abid Zuberi and Tahir Faraz Abbasi – voted against Bhoon’s appointment.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Tahir Faraz Abbasi, who was also a candidate, received only four votes.<\/p>\n

According to a statement issued by the PBC, 20 members of the council attended the meeting. Khushdil Khan and Yasin Azad proposed Bhoon’s nomination, which was seconded by Hasan Raza Pasha and Pir Muhammad Masood Chishti.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, Shafqat Chauhan proposed Tahir Faraz Abbasi’s name, which was supported by Abid Zuberi. Bhoon secured the majority vote through a show of hands, confirming his appointment from Feb 26, 2025 – Feb 25, 2027.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
