{"id":90308,"date":"2025-02-12T02:47:05","date_gmt":"2025-02-12T02:47:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/committee-formed-to-probe-national-kitty-losses-after-ex-ministers-2020-pilot-licence-remarks\/"},"modified":"2025-02-12T02:47:05","modified_gmt":"2025-02-12T02:47:05","slug":"committee-formed-to-probe-national-kitty-losses-after-ex-ministers-2020-pilot-licence-remarks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/committee-formed-to-probe-national-kitty-losses-after-ex-ministers-2020-pilot-licence-remarks\/","title":{"rendered":"Committee formed to probe national kitty losses after ex-minister\u2019s 2020 pilot licence remarks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>The federal cabinet has set up a committee to investigate financial losses to the national exchequer following former aviation minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan\u2019s 2020 statement in Parliament about pilots with dubious licences, it emerged on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in the National Assembly in 2020, while talking about a PIA plane crash in May of that year, the then federal minister said that the government had observed that major airlines in other countries did not have such a history of crashes and therefore, started to investigate pilots.<\/p>\n<p>He claimed that almost 40 per cent of pilots had \u201cfake licenses\u201d, adding that of the 860 active pilots, 262 pilots did not even take their exams themselves.<\/p>\n<p>According to a cabinet secretariat notification seen by <em>Dawn.com<\/em> today, the newly formed committee will \u201cassess the financial losses incurred by the national exchequer due to the irresponsible statement\u201d by Khan in 2020.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:250px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1587854\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The committee will also \u201cevaluate the reputational damage caused to the country and [the Pakistan International Airlines] due to this irresponsible statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The seven-member committee will be chaired by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif as the convener. It will also comprise the minister for law and justice, the minister for finance and revenue, the secretaries of the defence ministry and ministry of law and justice, the CEO of PIA, and the director general of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).<\/p>\n<p>The committee is expected to submit its reports to the cabinet within four weeks, according to the notification.<\/p>\n<p>In January, a cabinet meeting was briefed regarding the comments by Khan, and how they were \u201cirresponsible and exaggerated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, according to a press briefing from the Prime Minister\u2019s office, the federal cabinet had approved the formation of a fact-finding committee to review the statement and its financial consequences.<\/p>\n<p>According to Khan\u2019s statement in 2020, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1565352#:~:text=The%20pilots%20include%20141%20from%20Pakistan%20International%20Airlines%2C%20nine%20from%20Air%20Blue%20and%2010%20from%20Serene%20Air%2C%20Khan%20said%2C%20adding%20that%20the%20remaining%20were%20affiliated%20with%20flying%20clubs%2C%20chartered%20plane%20services%20or%20foreign%20airlines.\">pilots<\/a> included 141 from Pakistan PIA, nine from Air Blue and 10 from Serene Air, while the rest were affiliated with flying clubs, chartered plane services or foreign airlines.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after his revelation, he announced that the pilots whose credentials may have been falsified would be immediately grounded, pending investigations.<\/p>\n<p>Following that, the federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1566689\">assured<\/a> that an inquiry into the matter was in progress.
