This time must be different. Let\u2019s commit to concrete action to improve math achievement for all students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We, the undersigned, recognize the challenge these results present. Rather than dwell on the numbers, we call on states and districts to take decisive action by adopting policies that will raise student math achievement. United, we ask policymakers to embrace\u00a0<i>bipartisan<\/i>\u00a0solutions that help ensure\u00a0<i>all<\/i>\u00a0kids \u2014 especially those from under-resourced communities \u2014\u00a0have access to a high-quality math education.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Together, we recommend six key strategies, backed by research and practice:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-top:0in; margin-bottom:0in;\"><b>Expand access to high-quality instructional materials<\/b>\u00a0aligned to rigorous standards.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top:0in; margin-bottom:0in;\"><b>Provide educators with high-quality professional learning<\/b>\u00a0focused on effectively using instructional materials in the classroom.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top:0in; margin-bottom:0in;\"><b>Increase instructional time<\/b>\u00a0by extending learning opportunities before, during, and after the school day.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top:0in; margin-bottom:0in;\"><b>Automatically enroll students into advanced math courses<\/b>\u00a0based on objective assessment results\u00a0or\u00a0other data.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top:0in; margin-bottom:0in;\"><b>Hold teacher preparation programs accountable<\/b>\u00a0for equipping teachers with the skills and content needed to succeed in math instruction.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top:0in; margin-bottom:0in;\"><b>Leverage math coaches<\/b> at the school or district level to work closely with teachers to improve classroom practice and, ultimately, student math achievement.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Moreover, we call upon local leaders to directly connect the math needs of our students to the workforce necessities of our communities. There\u2019s no question that the more students that have a strong math education, the stronger our workforce will be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBusiness and industry leaders across our region, and the nation, are seeking applicants with strong math, reasoning, and data analysis skills,&#8221; said Jack McDougle, President &amp; CEO, Greater Washington Board of Trade. \u201cBoth a child\u2019s potential for success and the future health of our workforce are dependent on equipping students with the skills that math helps form and strengthen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Progress is Possible \u2014 and Already Happening<br \/><\/b>States across the country are proving that progress is within reach:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-top:0in; margin-bottom:0in;\">Rhode Island and Mississippi alike have taken concrete steps to increase access to high-quality instructional materials in math.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top:0in; margin-bottom:0in;\">Texas, Washington, and North Carolina have implemented\u00a0automatic enrollment\u00a0policies to ensure students are not overlooked for advanced math coursework.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top:0in; margin-bottom:0in;\">Arkansas and Massachusetts have strengthened teacher preparation programs, requiring higher standards for math instruction.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top:0in; margin-bottom:0in;\">Alabama and Colorado are offering programs and resources that empower teachers to improve instruction and extend learning beyond the classroom.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These success stories demonstrate that bipartisan action can yield real results. Now is the time for every state and district to follow their lead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the NAEP results are concerning \u2014\u00a0but we cannot let them be the final word. Instead, they should be the starting point for collective action.
