Washington, D.C., July 27, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Thurgood Marshall College Fund<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(TMCF) President and CEO\u00a0Dr. Harry L. Williams<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0will speak at the\u00a0Aegis Trust conference<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in Kigali, Rwanda on July 27. Dr. Williams will discuss TMCF\u2019s efforts to support college education for descendants of slavery.<\/p>\n

TMCF administers the\u00a0scholarship program<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0created by the\u00a0Descendants Truth & Reconciliation Foundation<\/strong><\/a>, which awards up to $10,000 per year to eligible students.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an honor to share the story of our partnership with Descendants Truth & Reconciliation Foundation to administer aid for higher education to the descendants of the 272 enslaved men, women and children, known as the\u00a0GU272<\/strong><\/a>, who were sold to help pay off the debts of the institution,\u201d Dr. Williams said. \u201cThis story is a great example of how the process of racial justice and healing can begin.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dr. Williams will be joined in Rwanda by international scholars, educators, policy makers and more at the conference dedicated to the art and science of peace, resilience and transformational justice. This calendar year also marks 30 years since the genocide against the Tutsi and the country\u2019s emergence from devastation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The conference takes place July 25-28 and includes the launch and ribbon cutting of the Isoko Peace Institute, sessions on leadership development for peacemaking and justice, and a world report on preventing genocide and mass atrocities.<\/p>\n
