{"id":82783,"date":"2024-07-22T21:20:36","date_gmt":"2024-07-22T21:20:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/us-secret-service-chief-admits-failure-in-trump-shooting-says-she-wont-resign\/"},"modified":"2024-07-22T21:20:36","modified_gmt":"2024-07-22T21:20:36","slug":"us-secret-service-chief-admits-failure-in-trump-shooting-says-she-wont-resign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/us-secret-service-chief-admits-failure-in-trump-shooting-says-she-wont-resign\/","title":{"rendered":"US Secret Service chief admits failure in Trump shooting, says she won\u2019t resign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle admitted to Congress on Monday that she and her agency failed when a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1845712\/trump-urges-americans-to-unite-after-assassination-attempt\">would-be assassin wounded<\/a> Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, but rebuffed bipartisan calls to resign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe failed,\u201d Cheatle said in testimony before the House of Representatives Oversight Committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump on July 13th is the most significant operational failure at the Secret Service in decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:250px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1845769\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Republican and Democratic lawmakers called on her to resign, calls that she rebuffed, saying at one point, \u201cI think that I am the best person to lead the Secret Service at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the face of Republican claims that the Secret Service denied resources to protect Trump, Cheatle said security for the former president had grown ahead of the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe level of security provided for the former president increased well before the campaign and has been steadily increasing as threats evolve,\u201d Cheatle said.<\/p>\n<p>She added that the Secret Service provided the security sought by the Trump campaign for the rally.<\/p>\n<p>She declined to answer specific questions about the day\u2019s security plan from openly frustrated Republicans and Democrats, saying the matter was being investigated internally.<\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s hearing marked the first round of congressional oversight of the attempted assassination.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, FBI Director Christopher Wray will appear before the House Judiciary Committee.<\/p>\n<p>House Speaker Mike Johnson is also due to unveil a bipartisan task force to serve as a nexus point for House investigations.<\/p>\n<p>Republican House Oversight Committee James Comer called for Cheatle to step down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is my firm belief, Director Cheatle, that you should resign,\u201d the Kentucky Republican told her. \u201cThe Secret Service has thousands of employees and a significant budget. But it has now become the face of incompetence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Representative Ro Khanna also called for her to resign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have an assassination attempt on a president, former president or a candidate, you need to resign,\u201d the California Democrat said. \u201cYou cannot go leading the Secret Service agency, when there is an assassination attempt on a presidential candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another Democrat, Representative Gerry Connolly, said the shooting highlighted the increasingly polarised state of a nation experiencing heightened political tensions.<\/p>\n<p>But he expressed exasperation when Cheatle declined to say her job was complicated by the easy availability of guns, especially assault rifles like the one used in the Trump shooting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you wonder why we might have a lack of confidence in your continued ability to direct this agency,\u201d Connolly said.<\/p>\n<p>The shooting at an outdoor campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, wounded Trump in the ear, killed one rally attendee and injured another.<\/p>\n<p>The suspected shooter, 20-year-old nursing home aide Thomas Crooks, was killed by law enforcement. It is not clear what his motive was for the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>The House Judiciary Committee said last week that it had evidence the Secret Service was not properly resourced for Trump\u2019s rally, because of staffing shortages created by a rival campaign event in Pittsburgh with Jill Biden and a Nato summit held days before in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>Cheatle told lawmakers that the agency protected 36 individuals daily, as well as world leaders who visited the United States.<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden on Sunday ended his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1847110\/biden-81-pulls-out-of-presidential-race-will-serve-out-term\">floundering<\/a> re-election bid, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed him as candidate.
