PTI Chairman Imran Khan, who has been serving a three-year sentence in the Toshakhana case at the Attock Jail, was on Tuesday shifted to Rawalpindi\u2019s Adiala jail on directives of the Islamabad High Court (IHC).<\/p>\n
Adiala jail superintendent Asad Warraich confirmed to Dawn.com<\/em> that the ex-premier had reached the prison. He said security surrounding the Adiala jail was tightened.<\/p>\n Waraich further stated that Imran would be provided facilities according to the jail manual.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, in a post on social media platform X, the PTI posted a video which showed party supporters showering rose petals on the police convoy transporting Imran near the Islamabad Toll Plaza.<\/p>\n The development comes a day after the IHC, while hearing petitions seeking Imran\u2019s transfer to Rawalpindi, observed that under-trial prisoners (UTPs) of all the courts in the federal capital were kept at Adiala and issued directions to shift the PTI chief to that prison.<\/p>\n Earlier today, the court issued its written verdict on Imran\u2019s plea seeking transfer to Rawalpindi\u2019s Adiala Jail, ordering the same and setting aside all previous notifications and orders under which he was detained at the Attock jail.<\/p>\n The order, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com<\/em>, stated that the current status of the petitioner was an under-trial prisoner. Noting that Islamabad did not have a prison of its own, it said that all such prisoners facing cases in the capital were to be kept at the Adiala Jail.<\/p>\n \u201cTo say that it (Adiala Jail) cannot house another prisoner\/person, would not reflect the correct position,\u201d the order stated.<\/p>\n It further said, \u201cThere is nothing on record to substantiate the plea of the respondents regarding security concerns or lack of adequate security at the Central Jail Adyala, Rawalpindi.\u201d<\/p>\n On the matter of jail facilities provided to the former premier, it observed: \u201cHe (Imran) shall be entitled to all the facilities which are afforded to a better-class prisoner.\u201d<\/p>\n Regarding the request<\/a> made a day ago that the PTI chief be provided with an \u201cexercise machine\u201d, the IHC said it could not issue such directions and whether it was permissible or not, and directed Imran to file an application for it before the Attock jail superintendent.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, the IHC also issued the written verdict on Imran\u2019s plea against the Federal Investigation Agency\u2019s request for in-camera proceedings of the PTI chief\u2019s bail plea before the high court.<\/p>\n In it, the IHC noted that the petitioner\u2019s counsel had submitted that he had \u201cno objection if unnecessary people are excluded\u201d from the hearing.<\/p>\n Stating that Section 14 of the Offical Secrets Act 1923 permitted the \u201cexclusion of public from the proceedings\u201d, the IHC said it required that the prosecution file an application for it.<\/p>\n \u201cIn case, the prosecution is interested that the public be excluded from the proceedings of instant case, it may move an appropriate application in this behalf,\u201d it observed.<\/p>\n Separately, a special court extended PTI Chairman Imran Khan\u2019s and Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi\u2019s judicial remand in the cipher case until October 10.<\/p>\n The cipher case<\/a> pertains to a diplomatic document which reportedly went missing from Imran\u2019s possession. The PTI alleges that it contained a threat from the United States to oust Imran from power.<\/p>\n Following the suspension<\/a> of the PTI chairman\u2019s three-year jail term in the Toshakhana case<\/a>, it emerged<\/a> that he had been in judicial remand in the cipher case.<\/p>\n As per the law ministry\u2019s notification<\/a>, Imran\u2019s special court proceedings are being held in the Attock jail \u201cdue to security reasons\u201d.<\/p>\n Imran\u2019s judicial remand was initially extended<\/a> till September 13 and then again till September 26<\/a>, along with Qureshi\u2019s. Both leaders\u2019 bail pleas were rejected<\/a> by the special court earlier this month. Subsequently, Imran has approached<\/a> the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking post-arrest bail.<\/p>\n Today, Special Court Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain presided over the in-camera hearing, which took place at Attock jail. Prior to the hearing, elaborate security arrangements were made outside the jail.<\/p>\n The law ministry had yesterday issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) for the hearing to be held at the Attock jail. A copy of the NOC was also sent to the jail superintendent.<\/p>\n During the hearing, the Federal Investigation Agency\u2019s (FIA) team was present as well as Imran\u2019s lawyers Salman Safdar and Umair Niazi. Naeem Haider Panjotha and Latif Khosa, who are also the PTI chief\u2019s counsels, also reached the jail to attend the hearing.<\/p>\n Subsequently, the judicial remand of the ex-premier was extended till October 10. The court also ordered the FIA to submit a challan soon of the case.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Qureshi was presented before the special court at the Federal Judicial Complex (FJC) in Islamabad, where his attendance was marked by court officials. He was brought to the court handcuffed.<\/p>\n The FIA\u2019s team, special prosecutors and PTI lawyers appeared before the court.
