Rahul Gandhi says voters have &#8220;punished&#8221; BJP.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s alliance was headed for a narrow majority as <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/thewire.in\/politics\/election-results-live-bjp-india-bloc-congress-modi\">vote counting<\/a> in the general election neared completion on Tuesday, with its tally well short of an expected landslide in a surprise setback for the populist leader.<\/p>\n<p>The alliance led by Modi\u2019s Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a parliamentary majority at the country\u2019s general election, <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/results.eci.gov.in\/PcResultGenJune2024\/index.htm\">official results<\/a> showed late in the night.<\/p>\n<p>With a few constituencies still left to declare, it had secured 272 seats, enough for a majority in the 543-seat parliament, results on the election commission website showed.<\/p>\n<p>The BJP itself had won 224 seats and was leading in 16 more for a projected total of 240 \u2014 by far the largest party but a significant drop from the 303 seats it won at the last polls in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The main opposition Congress party had won 88 seats and was leading in 11 for a projected total of 99, nearly double the 52 it secured five years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Having to depend on allies to form the government could introduce some uncertainty into policymaking after a decade in which Modi has ruled with an authoritative hold.<\/p>\n<p>The BJP won a majority on its own in 2014, ending India\u2019s era of unstable coalition governments, and repeated the feat in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Modi said people had placed their faith in the BJP-led coalition for a third time and it was historic, in his first comments since the counting of votes began.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe blessings of the people for the third time after 10 years boosts our morale, gives new strength,\u201d Modi told cheering BJP members at party headquarters in New Delhi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur opponents, despite being united, could not even win as many seats as BJP won.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Promising to work harder and take \u201cbig decisions\u201d, Modi listed electronics, semiconductors and defence manufacturing, renewables and the farm sectors as areas of special focus in his third term, without elaborating.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full  w-full  media--stretch  media--embed  \">\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"LIVE: PM Modi attends a programme at BJP HQ after 2024 General Election results\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TQnEfCFqDXc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; The NIFTY 50 and the S&amp;P BSE Sensex were both down over 2 per cent at 5am GMT. The Indian rupee also fell against the dollar and benchmark bond yields were up.<\/p>\n<p>The markets had soared on Monday after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1837079\/tv-exit-poll-summary-projects-victory-for-indian-pm-modi-in-general-election\">exit polls<\/a> on June 1 projected Modi and his BJP would register a big victory, with its NDA seen getting a two-thirds majority and more.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Indian National Congress (INC) supporters react on the day of the general election results at the party headquarters, in New Delhi, India, June 4. \u2014 Reuters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The first votes counted were postal ballots, which are paper ballots, mostly cast by troops serving outside their home constituencies or officials away from home on election duty. Nearly one billion people were registered to vote, of which 642 million turned out.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the results so far, Modi claimed victory for a third term  in a statement on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople have placed their faith in NDA for a third consecutive time\u201d, Modi wrote on social media platform X. \u201cThis is a historical feat in India\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Modi said at the weekend he was confident that \u201cthe people of India have voted in record numbers\u201d to re-elect his government, a decade after he first became prime Modi\u2019s BJP after election commission figures showed the government projected to return with a reduced majority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoters have punished the BJP,\u201d Gandhi told reporters. \u201cI was confident that the people of this country would give the right response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe country has unanimously and clearly stated, we do not want Narendra Modi and Amit Shah to be involved in the running of this country, we do not like the way they have run this country,\u201d Gandhi told reporters, referring to Modi\u2019s powerful number two, Home Minister Shah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is a huge message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gandhi said Congress would hold talks with its allies on Wednesday and decide on the future course of action when asked if the opposition would try to form a government.<\/p>\n<p>Gandhi was also re-elected to India\u2019s parliament by a margin of more than 364,000 in the southern constituency of Wayanad, election commission figures showed.<\/p>\n<p>Gandhi ran for two seats in this year\u2019s poll, a strategy legal under Indian election law, and also had an unassailable lead of more than 389,000 votes for the seat of Rae Bareli BJP\u2019s <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/elections\/lok-sabha\/india\/bjps-400-paar-dream-lies-shattered-what-could-have-gone-wrong\/articleshow\/110695170.cms\">\u201croaring\u201d<\/a> <em>\u201c400 paar\u201d<\/em> slogan, the \u201cpersisting depression in demand in the hinterland, where most Indian voters live, could have cast a shadow\u201d on Modi\u2019s success, according to the <em>Economic Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Other factors may also have come into play: a united opposition comprising large and small opposition putting aside their differences to form the INDIA bloc, which appears to have garnered minority votes, could have made a difference, according to the analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Gandhi had reportedly made tempting offers \u2014 like large cash handouts \u2014 to the marginalised and various caste groups.<\/p>\n<p>The BJP also conceded defeat in a constituency where the inauguration of a grand Hindu temple just months ago by Modi was seen as an event that would cement his legacy and the party\u2019s poll victory.<\/p>\n<p>The BJP looks set for heavy losses in the bellwether northern state of Uttar Pradesh, as the opposition Samajwadi Party and Congress race ahead in more than half of its 80 seats, including in Ayodhya city in the Faizabad constituency where Modi inaugurated the temple in January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could not protect your and Ayodhya\u2019s dignity, there must have been some shortcoming in me,\u201d Lallu Singh, the BJP\u2019s incumbent lawmaker from Faizabad, told party workers, according to footage shared by the <em>Indian Express<\/em> daily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere must have been some reason that we couldn\u2019t win in the Ayodhya parliamentary region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Faizabad constituency elected Singh twice to the parliament, in 2014 and 2019, when Modi\u2019s party swept 71 and 62 seats in Uttar Pradesh, India\u2019s most populous state.<\/p>\n<p>Latest trends from the Election Commission showed the BJP\u2019s tally trimmed to 33 seats in the state, which has drawn the focus of analysts to the issues of unemployment and high inflation \u2014 two key concerns of voters that surveys showed trumped religion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very happy with the temple but people were fed up with the BJP,\u201d said Rakesh Yadav, the chairperson of the Ayodhya Vyapar Mandal, a traders body.<\/p>\n<p>He said there was anger among small business owners for getting lower than expected compensation when their shops were demolished during Ayodhya\u2019s redevelopment ahead of the temple inauguration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople will not always fall for the caste or temple-mosque politics. They also want to see development which is why the results may surprise us all,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"vitriolic-campaign\" href=\"#vitriolic-campaign\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Vitriolic campaign<\/h2>\n<p>Observers believe his appeals to growing Hindu nationalist sentiment will give him a third term in power.<\/p>\n<p>Modi\u2019s opponents have struggled to counter the campaign juggernaut of his BJP, and have been hamstrung by infighting and what they say are politically motivated criminal cases aimed at hobbling challengers.<\/p>\n<p>US think tank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1832661#:~:text=tank%20Freedom%20House-,said,-this%20year%20that\">Freedom House said<\/a> this year that the BJP had \u201cincreasingly used government institutions to target political opponents\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Investors have already cheered the prospects of another Modi term, expecting it to deliver further years of strong economic growth and pro-business reforms, while a possible two-thirds majority in parliament could allow major changes to the constitution, rivals and critics fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next government\u2019s main task will be to set India on the path of getting rich before it ages,\u201d the <em>Times of India<\/em> newspaper said in an <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/india\/private-message-for-next-govt\/articleshow\/110643935.cms\">editorial<\/a> on Tuesday, referring to the young, working age population in the world\u2019s most populous nation. \u201cThe clock\u2019s ticking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Arvind Kejriwal, chief minister of the capital Delhi and a key leader in an alliance formed to compete against Modi, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1837304\">returned to jail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kejriwal, 55, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1823277\">detained in March<\/a> over a long-running corruption probe, but was later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1832661\">released<\/a> and allowed to campaign as long as he returned to custody once voting
