rites attended by throngs of mourners after his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1834599\/pm-shehbaz-announces-day-of-mourning-on-tuesday-for-iranian-helicopter-crash-victims\">death<\/a> in a helicopter crash, state media reported.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of thousands marched in his hometown Mashhad to bid farewell to Raisi ahead of his burial following processions in the cities of Tabriz, Qom, Tehran and Birjand.<\/p>\n<p>The 63-year-old died on Sunday alongside his foreign minister and six others after their helicopter went down in the country\u2019s mountainous northwest while returning from a dam inauguration on the border with Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1834631\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Once the five days of public mourning, announced on Monday, have passed, the authorities, including acting President Mohammad Mokhber, will focus on organising an election for a new president set for June 28.<\/p>\n<p>Men and women, who were mainly clad in black chadors and clutching white flowers, crowded the main boulevard of Mashhad, the Islamic republic\u2019s second city in the northeast where Raisi was born.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">A handout AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Some held aloft placards paying tribute to Raisi as the \u201cman of the battlefield\u201d as a large truck carrying his body drove through the sea of mourners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have come, O king, give me refuge,\u201d said a slogan emblazoned on top of the truck, in reference to Imam Reza.<\/p>\n<p>Posters of Raisi, black flags and religious symbols were erected along the streets of Mashhad, particularly around Raisi\u2019s final resting place \u2014 the Imam Reza shrine, a key mausoleum visited by millions of pilgrims every year.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, thousands of people holding images of Raisi and waving flags lined the streets of Birjand, capital of the eastern province of South Khorasan, for the procession of Raisi\u2019s coffin.<\/p>\n<p>Raisi was South Khorasan\u2019s representative in the Assembly of Experts, a clerical body in charge of selecting or dismissing Iran\u2019s supreme leader.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"epic-farewell\" href=\"#epic-farewell\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>\u2018Epic farewell\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Raisi had widely been expected to succeed supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1835006\/tens-of-thousands-gather-for-raisi-funeral-procession-in-tehran\">led prayers in Tehran<\/a> on Wednesday for the late president and knelt before the coffins of the eight people killed in the helicopter crash.<\/p>\n<p>Among them was foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who was buried on Thursday in the shrine of Shah Abdol-Azim in the town of Shahre Ray south of the capital.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Mourners burial.<\/p>\n<p>Massive crowds had gathered for a funeral procession in the Iranian capital on Wednesday to pay their final respects to the president, whom officials and media dubbed a \u201cmartyr\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s newspapers carried large front-page pictures of the gathering on Thursday, hailing the ceremonies as an \u201cEpic farewell\u201d and saying Raisi would forever remain \u201cIn the hearts of the people\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Reformist dailies such as <em>Sazandegi<\/em> carried headlines that read: \u201cThe last farewell\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Tunisian President Kais Saied and Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani attended an afternoon ceremony for Raisi on Wednesday in which around 60 countries took part, according to the official news agency <em>IRNA<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Member countries of the European Union were among the absentees of the ceremony, while some non-member countries, including Belarus and Serbia, had representatives.<\/p>\n<p>The leaders of the Iran-led \u201caxis of resistance\u201d regional militant groups also came to the Islamic republic for the funeral.<\/p>\n<p>Among them were Ismail Haniyeh, leader of Hamas\u2019s political bureau in Qatar, and senior members of Lebanon\u2019s Hezbollah movement and Yemen\u2019s Houthi rebels as well as representatives of Islamic Jihad and Iraqi militant groups.<\/p>\n<p>They met on the sidelines of the funeral with General Hossein Salami, commander of Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards, and Esmail Qaani, head of the Guards\u2019 foreign operations arm, the Quds Force, for talks on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"uncertainty\" href=\"#uncertainty\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Uncertainty<\/h2>\n<p>Khamenei, who wields ultimate authority in Iran, declared the five days of national mourning and assigned vice president Mokhber, 68, as caretaker president until the June 28 election.<\/p>\n<p>A presidential election in Iran had not been expected until next year, and the crash has caused some uncertainty as to who will succeed Raisi, with some expressing concern about the upcoming president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do I find someone like him? I\u2019m really worried about that,\u201d said 31-year-old cleric Mohsen at Wednesday\u2019s gathering in Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as I know, we don\u2019t have anyone of his stature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raisi was elected president in 2021, succeeding the moderate Hassan Rouhani at a time when the economy was battered by US sanctions imposed over Iran\u2019s nuclear activities.<\/p>\n<p>The ultra-conservative\u2019s time in office saw mass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1715177\">protests<\/a>, a deepening economic crisis and unprecedented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1828325\">armed exchanges<\/a> with arch-enemy Israel.<br \/>\nAfter his death, Russia and China sent their condolences, as did Nato, while the UN Security Council observed a minute\u2019s silence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1834643\">Messages of condolence<\/a> also flooded in from Iran\u2019s allies around the region, including the Syrian government as well as Hamas and Hezbollah.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi was laid to rest on Thursday, concluding days of funeral rites attended by throngs of mourners after his death in a helicopter crash, state media reported.
