A-list actor Mahira Khan opened up on her battle with manic depression for the first time; said she has been on anti-depressants for the last six years.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a new interview with\u00a0former supermodel and now entrepreneur Frieha Altaf, on her podcast \u2018FWhy\u2019<\/em>, Mahira Khan tearfully spoke about being diagnosed with manic depression (bipolar disorder), which was further triggered after the backlash on her Bollywood debut \u2018Raees\u2019<\/em> opposite Shahrukh Khan and artist\u2019s ban from India.<\/p>\n

\u201cI ended up in a psychiatrist\u2019s office, and she said, \u2018We\u2019ll talk about everything later, but I need you to know that you have manic depression\u2019,\u201d she recalled the moment.<\/p>\n

Khan continued, \u201cThis is the first time I\u2019m saying that, I don\u2019t know if I should. It\u2019s been 6-7 years; I\u2019ve been on anti-depressants. I tried leaving them in the middle, and I went into a very, very dark space.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though she considered herself a \u2018very hopeful person\u2019, Khan said that she understood what she was \u2018going through\u2019 couldn\u2019t be addressed with prayers, or spending time with friends<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, everyone has sad times and happy times and success and failure, but clinical depression is real,\u201d she noted, adding a lot of her illness had to do with genetics.<\/p>\n

\u2018Aik Hai Nigar\u2019<\/em> actor shared that she even tried to quit her medication, but things went worse and she had to resume it. \u201cLast year, it was bad, I was in bed\u2026 I remember, very well, that I couldn\u2019t even get up from my bed to go to the bathroom. I was that bad, it was that dark. I remember praying, \u2018I promise you Allah, if you show me even this much hope or light, I will take it and I will run with it.\u2019 And when he did, and when I went back on my medicines, I woke up feeling like, \u2018Oh my god, I feel like I can smile, feel lighter\u2019,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven in my darkest, worst moments, I never project it. It\u2019s all inside me, mere andar tabahi mach rahi hai <\/em>(there would be a storm inside me), but\u2026 It\u2019s been a journey with my depression. I\u2019ve had to work through it, I\u2019ve had to dance through it\u2026,\u201d she concluded before expressing gratitude for her friends, family, and therapist who stood by her through tough times.<\/p>\n
