After Monday\u2019s hearing, two senior judges said Assange\u2019s argument that he might not be able to rely on the US.<\/p>\n<p>First Amendment right to free speech deserved a full appeal \u2014 which is unlikely to be held for months. The news prompted cheering and singing from hundreds of supporters who had massed outside the court tying yellow ribbons to the iron railings, holding placards and chanting \u201cFree, free Julian Assange!\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a family we\u2019re relieved but how long can this go on?\u201d said Assange\u2019s wife Stella, who had been in court with his brother and father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States should read the situation and drop this case now. The US Justice Department declined to comment on a pending judicial matter.<\/p>\n<p>Had Monday\u2019s ruling gone against him, Assange\u2019s team said he could have been on a plane to the US within 24 hours, ending more than 13 years of legal battles in Britain.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"us-assurance-fails-to-convince-uk-judges\" href=\"#us-assurance-fails-to-convince-uk-judges\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>US assurance fails to convince UK judges<\/h2>\n<p>US prosecutors had told the court Assange could \u201cseek to rely\u201d upon the First Amendment protections granted to US citizens, and would not be discriminated against because of his nationality.<\/p>\n<p>But his legal team said a US court would not be bound by this. \u201cWe say this is a blatantly inadequate assurance,\u201d Assange\u2019s lawyer Edward Fitzgerald told the judges.<\/p>\n<p>The court also concluded that Assange\u2019s appeal should apply to all 18 counts, not only three, as lawyers for the US had argued. Fitzgerald did, however, accept a separate US assurance that Assange would not face the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p>The US said its First Amendment assurances were sufficient.<\/p>\n<p>James Lewis, representing the US authorities, said in court documents that the assurance \u201ccannot bind the courts\u201d, but that the US courts would \u201ctake solemn notice and give effect so far as they are able to a promise given by the executive\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"protester-appeal-to-biden\" href=\"#protester-appeal-to-biden\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Protester appeal to Biden<\/h2>\n<p>Protesters gathered outside the court early on Monday, tying yellow ribbons to the iron railings, holding placards and chanting \u201cFree, free Julian Assange\u201d. In a plea to US President Joe Biden, flags read: \u201cLet him go Joe\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1827105\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>One protester, Emilia Butlin, 54, told <em>Reuters<\/em> that she wanted to show solidarity: \u201cHe, with his work, has offered tremendous service to the public, informing them about what governments are doing in their name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Assange\u2019s wife Stella appeared in court with his brother and father, but Assange stayed away for health reasons, Fitzgerald said.<\/p>\n<p>WikiLeaks released hundreds of thousands of classified US military documents on Washington\u2019s wars in Afghanistan and Iraq \u2014 the largest security breaches of their kind in US military history \u2014 along with swathes of diplomatic cables.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2010, it published a classified video showing a 2007 US helicopter attack that killed a dozen people in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, including two <em>Reuters<\/em> news staff.<\/p>\n<p>The US authorities want to put the Australian-born Assange on trial on 18 charges, nearly all under the Espionage Act, saying his actions with WikiLeaks were reckless, damaged national security and endangered the lives of agents.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch    media--uneven  media--stretch\"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Supporters of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange hold banners and placards as they protest in support of him, outside The Royal Courts of Justice, Britain\u2019s High Court, in central London on May 20. \u2014 AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>His many global supporters call the prosecution a travesty, an assault on journalism and free speech, and revenge for causing embarrassment. Calls for the case to be dropped have come from human rights groups, media bodies and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, along with other political leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Assange was first arrested in Britain in 2010 on a Swedish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/589318\/newspaper\/column\">warrant<\/a> over sex crime allegations that were later dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, he has been variously under house arrest, holed up in Ecuador\u2019s embassy in London for seven years and, since 2019, held in the Belmarsh top security jail.<\/p>\n<p>He married Stella there in 2022 and the couple have two young children.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was given permission on Monday to appeal against extradition to the United States after arguing at London\u2019s High Court that he might not be able to rely on his right to free speech in a US court.
