{"id":75653,"date":"2024-03-26T15:17:10","date_gmt":"2024-03-26T15:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/indian-opposition-supporters-detained-ahead-of-protest-at-modis-delhi-home\/"},"modified":"2024-03-26T15:17:10","modified_gmt":"2024-03-26T15:17:10","slug":"indian-opposition-supporters-detained-ahead-of-protest-at-modis-delhi-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/indian-opposition-supporters-detained-ahead-of-protest-at-modis-delhi-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian opposition supporters detained ahead of protest at Modi\u2019s Delhi home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Police in the Indian capital detained dozens of opposition supporters on Tuesday as they attempted to march to Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s residence to protest against last week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1823136\/delhi-cm-arvind-kejriwal-challenges-arrest-ahead-of-india-election\">arrest<\/a> of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1823159\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Kejriwal, a key opposition leader whose Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has governed the national capital territory for a decade, was arrested by the financial crime-fighting agency on corruption charges relating to the city\u2019s liquor policy, weeks before India begins voting in general elections on April 19.<\/p>\n<p>He was remanded to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate until March 28, with the lawyer for the agency arguing he was the \u201ckingpin\u201d in the case and needed to be interrogated.<\/p>\n<p>Kejriwal\u2019s party, all of whose main leaders are now imprisoned in connection with the case, says he has been \u201cfalsely arrested\u201d in a \u201cfabricated case\u201d. The federal government and Modi\u2019s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) deny political interference.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Kejriwal\u2019s supporters attempted to march to Modi\u2019s residence but were stopped by police at a location where they gathered about five kilometres away.<\/p>\n<p>Television visuals showed several protesters sitting on the ground and chanting slogans as police personnel tried to haul them into buses.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in the city, police used water cannon to disperse BJP supporters trying to march to the Delhi Secretariat to demand Kejriwal\u2019s resignation, and detained some of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe chief minister of Delhi is corrupt and dishonest \u2026 he will have to resign,\u201d state BJP President Virendraa Sachdeva told news agency <em>ANI<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>AAP leaders said Kejriwal would not resign and protests demanding his release would continue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to tell the federal government, this fight, this movement, will not stop because of the force of your police, this voice is reaching the entire nation,\u201d Delhi\u2019s Environment Minister Gopal Rai told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple metro stations were closed \u201cuntil further notice\u201d due to \u201csecurity reasons\u201d, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said on messaging platform X on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Delhi Police issued a notice warning traffic would be affected \u201cin view of special Law and Order arrangement\u201d in the city.<\/p>\n<p>AAP is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1765451\">\u2018INDIA\u2019 bloc<\/a>, an alliance of more than two dozen political parties formed last year to jointly challenge the BJP in the general elections.<\/p>\n<p>![ .]](<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1823277\/arrests-of-kejriwal-and-co-galvanise-frayed-indian-opposition\">https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1823277\/arrests-of-kejriwal-and-co-galvanise-frayed-indian-opposition<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The group plans to hold a joint rally in Delhi on March 31 to protest against Kejriwal\u2019s arrest, hoping to renew their unity after bickering and failed attempts at sharing seats to field common candidates against the BJP.<\/p>\n<p>The arrest of the high-profile Kejriwal, whose party also rules the northern Indian state of Punjab, has drawn international attention, with Germany and the US appealing for a \u201cfair\u201d and \u201cimpartial\u201d trial in the case in line with \u201cbasic democratic principles\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Police in the Indian capital detained dozens of opposition supporters on Tuesday as they attempted to march to Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s residence to protest against last week\u2019s arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
