Veteran diplomat and former chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Shaharyar Khan passed away early in the morning in Lahore on Saturday. He was 89.<\/p>\n
The Foreign Office paid tribute to the diplomat \u2014 who performed many roles during his distinguished career between 1957 and 1994 at the foreign ministry, including foreign secretary, ambassador and high commissioner \u2014 and honoured his \u201cmonumental services in protecting Pakistan\u2019s diplomatic interests\u201d.<\/p>\n
Foreign Secretary Muhammad Syrus Qazi said he was deeply saddened by Khan\u2019s passing and praised him as \u201cone of Pakistan\u2019s finest diplomats.\u201d<\/p>\n
Qazi said the deceased left behind a \u201crich legacy of accomplishment and protecting and promoting Pakistan\u2019s interests\u201d.<\/p>\n
Pakistan\u2019s mission to the UN said Khan\u2019s death was a great loss to the country and hailed him as a \u201clegendary public servant who served Pakistan with utmost dedication\u201d.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the PCB also expressed deep sadness and sorrow over the death of its former chairman \u2014 who served in the role for two terms.<\/p>\n
He served as chairman of the board from December 2003 to October 2006 and from August 2014 to August 2017, according to a PCB statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cShaharyar Khan also worked as team manager of the Pakistan National Men\u2019s team during the 1999 tour of India and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003,\u201d the press release said.<\/p>\n It added that the board pays \u201cheartfelt condolences to Shaharyar Khan\u2019s family on his sad demise\u201d, wishing to always remember him as one of the vital characters in bringing cricket back to Pakistan during the last decade<\/a>.<\/p>\n
