{"id":72643,"date":"2024-03-18T16:46:04","date_gmt":"2024-03-18T16:46:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/x-already-banned-when-new-govt-took-over-information-minister-tarar\/"},"modified":"2024-03-18T16:46:04","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T16:46:04","slug":"x-already-banned-when-new-govt-took-over-information-minister-tarar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/x-already-banned-when-new-govt-took-over-information-minister-tarar\/","title":{"rendered":"X already banned when new govt took over: Information Minister Tarar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Information Minister Attaullah Tarar on Monday acknowledged that social media platform X was already banned when the new government took over the reins from the caretaker setup, saying there was no official notification for the clampdown.<\/p>\n<p>Access to X has been disrupted in many areas of Pakistan since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1814999\">February 17<\/a>, when former Rawal\u00adpindi commissioner Liaquat Chattha accused the chief election commissioner and chief justice of Pakistan of being involved in rigging the February 8 general elections.<\/p>\n<p>Similar disruptions were also observed during the general elections.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  \">\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"Atta Tarar&#039;s important statement on the closure of Twitter - Geo News\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IRzMOEkmBoc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The information minister had himself pushed back last week against the disruption and claimed X was still working, calling on those questioning otherwise to present a notification for the ban.<\/p>\n<p>However, in an interview today with media platform <em>World Echo News<\/em>, Tarar contrasted his own statement, saying: \u201cTwitter was already banned when we came into government. There is no official notification for it but obviously, everyone can see that its signal and frequency are not working as normal and it is being used through virtual private networks. I would want that I fully perform my role regarding freedom of expression and journalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Questioned about the Punjab government\u2019s plans to bring a law tackling \u201cfake news\u201d and whether the federal government intended to bring something similar, Tarar said it would be better for political parties to decide matters between themselves on tackling the issue of \u201cfake news\u201d instead of the state sorting out the matter.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1821357\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>He also said talks could be and should be held with the Sunni Ittehad Council, and praised the conduct of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur for creating an atmosphere of conciliation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think, hopefully, matters will be able to positively proceed with them,\u201d Tarar added.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, PTA spokesperson Malahat Obaid told Dawn.com to direct questions to the interior ministry regarding the disruption of X. \u201cWe can\u2019t say anything on this matter now because we don\u2019t know. Will share with you if any statement comes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Questioned why the ministry should be approached when the internet fell in the PTA\u2019s domain, she said: \u201cBecause the instructions are from the government\u201d and declined to answer on whether the interior ministry had written to the authority to curtail access to X.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"govt-urged-to-restore-x\" href=\"#govt-urged-to-restore-x\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Govt urged to restore X<\/h2>\n<p>Amnesty International on Saturday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1822034\">called for the im\u00admediate restoration<\/a> of soc\u00adial media platform X.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1821248\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In a post on X, the human rights group said it had signed a joint statement with 28 civil society organisations for the restoration of X and urged \u201cPakistani authorities to uphold the rights to freedom of expression and access to information under the country\u2019s international human rights commitments\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The joint statement signed by Amnesty Inter\u00adna\u00adtional and civil society organisations called for immediate restoration of the platform. \u201cWe, a collective of human rights activists and civil society organisations, express profound concern over the incr\u00adeasing instances of internet shutdowns and social media platform blocking, specifically in the lead up to and following the general elections in Pakis\u00adtan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese actions not only infringe upon the fundamental rights of freedom of expression and access to information but also set a troubling precedent of throttling genuine political discourse including plurality of voices in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The arbitrary blocking of platforms, including the prolonged and unannounced disruption of \u201cX\u201d, formerly Twitter, since Feb 17, is a sobering illustration of growing digital censorship in the country, it said.<\/p>\n<p>The statement was signed by Amnesty International, Pakistan Bar Council, PFUJ, AGHS, Bolo Bhi, Media Matters for Democracy, Digital Rights Foundation, Institute for Research, Advocacy and Development, Human Rights Watch, Freedom Network, Pakistan Press Foundation, Bytes for All, HRCP, Women Democratic Front, Access Now, AWP, Aurat March, Digital Media Alliance of Pakistan, Alliance for Diversity and Pluralism in Media in Pakistan, Pakistan Digital Editors Alliance, Pakistan Digital Media Association, Progressive Students Federation, Joint Action Committee for Refugees, Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum, Zuka Books, and Reporters Without Borders.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Information Minister Attaullah Tarar on Monday acknowledged that social media platform X was already banned when the new government took over the reins from the caretaker setup, saying there was no official notification for the clampdown.
