{"id":72587,"date":"2024-03-18T13:45:08","date_gmt":"2024-03-18T13:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/pakistan-carried-out-anti-terrorist-intelligence-operations-inside-afghanistan-fo-confirms\/"},"modified":"2024-03-18T13:45:08","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T13:45:08","slug":"pakistan-carried-out-anti-terrorist-intelligence-operations-inside-afghanistan-fo-confirms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/pakistan-carried-out-anti-terrorist-intelligence-operations-inside-afghanistan-fo-confirms\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan carried out anti-terrorist intelligence operations inside Afghanistan, FO confirms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>The Foreign Office (FO) on Monday confirmed that Pakistan carried out \u201cintelligence-based anti-terrorist operations\u201d inside the border regions of Afghanistan, hours after Kabul said airstrikes conducted on its soil had killed eight people.<\/p>\n<p>A press release from the FO said the prime targets of the operation conducted in the morning earlier today were terrorists belonging to the Hafiz Gul Bahadur Group, adding that the outfit, along with the banned militant Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), was responsible for multiple terrorist attacks inside Pakistan, resulting in \u201cdeaths of hundreds of civilians and law enforcement officials\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The FO added that the latest attack of such an instance took place on Saturday at a security post in Mir Ali in North Waziristan which claimed the lives of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1822037\/two-officers-five-troops-martyred-in-blasts-clashes\">seven Pakistani soldiers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The strikes come a day after President Asif Ali Zardari <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1822208\/president-vows-retaliation-as-attacks-continue\">vowed<\/a> retaliation following the martyrdom of the seven soldiers, including two officers, in the Saturday attack.<\/p>\n<p>Offering the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1822090\/funeral-prayers-held-for-2-army-officers-martyred-in-north-waziristan\">funeral prayers<\/a> of the two officers, he had asserted that the blood of the martyrs would not go in vain and the country would avenge them. The president said Pakistan would not hesitate to strike back if attacked by anyone at borders or inside its territory.<\/p>\n<p>The Hafiz Gul Bahadar group had claimed responsibility for the deadly attack in North Waziristan. Security officials say that fighters of the Gul Bahadar group operate from the Afghan side of the border, mostly from Khost.<\/p>\n<p>The strikes come amid growing contact between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban rulers in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan\u2019s charge d\u2019affaires in Kabul <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1821040\/senior-taliban-official-expresses-hope-for-cordial-pak-afghan-relations-in-meeting-with-envoy\">travelled<\/a> to Kandahar last week to meet Mullah Shirin Akhund, the Taliban governor for southern Kandahar who is one of the close confidants of the Taliban chief.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"pakistan-had-repeatedly-conveyed-concerns-to-afghan-authorities\" href=\"#pakistan-had-repeatedly-conveyed-concerns-to-afghan-authorities\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>\u2018Pakistan had repeatedly conveyed concerns to Afghan authorities\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The FO statement said that over the years, \u201cPakistan has repeatedly conveyed its serious concerns to the interim Afghan government over the presence of terror outfits, including TTP, inside Afghanistan. These terrorists pose a grave threat to Pakistan\u2019s security and have consistently used Afghan territory to launch terror attacks inside Pakistani territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FO said Pakistan accorded \u201cprime importance\u201d to Afghanistan\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity and therefore, always prioritised dialogue and cooperation to confront the terrorist threat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have repeatedly urged the Afghan authorities to take concrete and effective action to ensure that the Afghan soil is not used as a staging ground for terrorism against Pakistan. We have also called on them to deny safe havens to TTP and to hand over its leadership to Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPakistan has great respect for the people of Afghanistan. However, certain elements among those in power in Afghanistan are actively patronising TTP and using them as a proxy against Pakistan. Such an approach against a brotherly country, which stood with the people of Afghanistan through thick and thin, manifests shortsightedness. It ignores the support extended by Pakistan to the people of Afghanistan over the last several decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge these elements in power to rethink the policy of siding with <em>khwarij<\/em> terrorists shedding the blood of innocent Pakistanis and to make a clear choice to stand with the people of Pakistan,\u201d the FO said.<\/p>\n<p>It concluded that terrorist groups such as the TTP were a collective threat to regional peace and security, adding that it fully realised the challenge Afghan authorities faced in combating the threat posed by TTP.<\/p>\n<p>The FO said Pakistan would continue to work towards finding joint solutions in countering terrorism and to prevent any terrorist organisation from sabotaging bilateral relations with Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"afghanistan-warns-of-dire-consequences-summons-pakistani-cda\" href=\"#afghanistan-warns-of-dire-consequences-summons-pakistani-cda\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Afghanistan warns of dire consequences, summons Pakistani Cd\u2019A<\/h2>\n<p>Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson of the government, alleged earlier today in a statement that Pakistani aircraft had carried out airstrikes on Afghan soil in the provinces of Paktika and Khost along the Pakistan border, killing eight people.<\/p>\n<p>The Paktika province is located near Pakistan\u2019s South Waziristan District while Khost is situated near North Waziristan.<\/p>\n<p>Mujahid said that at \u201caround 3am, Pakistani aircraft bombarded civilian homes\u201d in Khost and Paktika provinces, claiming that all eight people killed were women and children.<\/p>\n<p>Mujahid told <em>Dawn.com<\/em> that planes had bombed the Laman area in Paktika\u2019s Barmal district and the Afghan-Dubai area in Khost\u2019s Spera district.<\/p>\n<p>Alleging that \u201chouses of common people were targeted\u201d, he said three women and as many children were killed in Paktika and a house collapsed while two women were killed in Khost, where a house was destroyed as well.<\/p>\n<p>In a government statement posted on Mujahid\u2019s X account, he said: \u201cThe Pakistani side is saying that [militant] Abdullah Shah was targeted in the strikes but he lives on the Pakistani side. Members of the same tribe live on both sides and routinely move across the border.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stated: \u201cThe Islamic Emirate strongly condemns the attacks and describes these as non-serious actions and violation of Afghanistani territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson further said: \u201cPakistan should not blame Afghanistan for their problems and failure to control violent incidents. Such acts can lead to dire consequences which will not be in control of Pakistan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A statement posted later by the Afghan foreign ministry said it summoned Pakistan\u2019s charge d\u2019affaires and also sent him a letter of protest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBesides condemning the attacks, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs Pakistan that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has a long experience of fighting for freedom against the superpowers of the world and cannot tolerate aggression on its territory in any way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new civilian government and the people of Pakistan should not allow some circles to complicate the relations between the two neighbouring Muslim countries with their irresponsible actions and wrong policies,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The TTP also confirmed the strikes.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Afghan defence ministry said its forces \u201ctargeted bases of Pakistani security forces across the border in response to Pakistan air strikes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, it said: \u201cIn response to that aggression, the border forces of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan targeted military bases of Pakistan\u2019s army across the artificial Durand Line with heavy weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe country\u2019s defence and security forces are ready to respond to any kind of aggression and will defend the country\u2019s territorial integrity in any situation,\u201d it asserted.<\/p>\n<p>The statement, issued with a photo of Afghan Defence Minister Mullah Yaqoob, said Pakistani fighter jets and drones entered Afghanistan airspace and bombed \u201chouses of civilians in an act of aggression\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"afghan-govt-providing-safe-haven-to-terrorists-ispr\" href=\"#afghan-govt-providing-safe-haven-to-terrorists-ispr\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Afghan govt providing safe haven to terrorists: ISPR<\/h2>\n<p>The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), in a statement, asserted that the \u201crecent wave of terrorism in Pakistan has the full support and assistance of Afghanistan\u201d but did not comment directly on the strikes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Afghan interim government is not only arming the terrorists but also providing a safe haven for other terrorist organisations as well as being involved in the incidents of terrorism in Pakistan,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the help of the Afghan Taliban and the supply of modern weapons, there has been an increase in the incidents of terrorism in Pakistan,\u201d the ISPR added.<\/p>\n<p>About the recent North Waziristan checkpost attack, the military\u2019s media wing said the \u201cfabric of loss of precious lives is also found with terrorists taking shelter in Afghanistan\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The statement said there was \u201cclear evidence of involvement of terrorists from Afghanistan\u201d in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1764380\">Zhob Garrison attack<\/a> in July 2023. It added that \u201cTTP terrorists armed with the latest American weapons <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1774386\">attacked<\/a> two army check posts in Chitral\u201d in September last year.<\/p>\n<p>The military\u2019s media wing said that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1786340\">November attack<\/a> on Mianwali Air Base was \u201calso planned by the terrorists taking refuge in Afghanistan\u201d. It said that \u201cterrorists from Afghanistan used night vision goggles and foreign weapons\u201d in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1797238\">Dera Ismail Khan attacks<\/a> in December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is clear evidence of the involvement of TTP terrorists who took refuge in Afghanistan in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1798040\">terrorist incident in Tank<\/a> on Dec 15, 2023,\u201d the ISPR stated.<\/p>\n<p>The statement also said terrorists from Afghanistan were also involved in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1735288\">Peshawar Police Lines blast<\/a> in January 2023, which claimed more than 80 lives.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"fatalities-reported-in-kurram-cross-border-clashes\" href=\"#fatalities-reported-in-kurram-cross-border-clashes\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Fatalities reported in Kurram cross-border clashes<\/h2>\n<p>Separately, a captain was reported to have been martyred and two soldiers were said to be injured in cross-border exchanges in Kurram District\u2019s Parachinar today.<\/p>\n<p>Kurram District Police Officer (DPO) Mazhar Jahan told <em>Dawn.com<\/em> about the casualties, adding that cross-border firing was ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that the security forces were on \u201chigh alert\u201d while local tribal leaders were also \u201ccooperating\u201d with the forces. \u201cEmergency\u201d status was imposed on all hospitals, the DPO added.<\/p>\n<p>Turi Bangash tribe\u2019s elder Jalal Bangash condemned the \u201cbaseless attack from Afghanistan\u201d. He said such attacks on Pakistani territory should be refrained from in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Malik Nazeer, a resident of the border area of Borki, told <em>Dawn.com<\/em> that people on both sides of the border have started evacuating the area.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"8-terrorists-including-high-value-target-killed-in-ibo\" href=\"#8-terrorists-including-high-value-target-killed-in-ibo\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>8 terrorists, including high-value target, killed in IBO<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, eight terrorists, including a high-value target (HVT), were killed in an intelligence-based operation in North Waziristan on the \u201cnight [of] March 17\/18\u201d, the ISPR said.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the military\u2019s media wing said, \u201cDuring the conduct of [the] operation, after intense fire exchange, eight terrorists including HVT terrorist commander Sehra alias Janan, were sent to hell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ISPR said Janan was \u201cinvolved in orchestrating\u201d the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1822037\/two-officers-five-troops-martyred-in-blasts-clashes\">Saturday attack<\/a> in North Waziristan and was \u201chighly wanted by the law enforcement agencies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSanitisation operations are being conducted to eliminate any other terrorists found in the area as the security forces of Pakistan remain determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism from the country,\u201d the statement asserted.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"avenged-blood-of-martyrs-ex-balochistan-minister\" href=\"#avenged-blood-of-martyrs-ex-balochistan-minister\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>\u2018Avenged blood of martyrs\u2019: ex-Balochistan minister<\/h2>\n<p>Jan Achakzai, the former caretaker Balochistan information minister, said, \u201cPakistan has avenged the blood of martyrs and targeted the safe havens of terrorists near the border.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jan_Achakzai\/status\/1769622468354838791\">post on X<\/a>, he said, \u201cIf there is any terror attack in Pakistan, we will conduct a strong attack inside Afghanistan. Remember, the life of a Pakistani is more valuable for us than the entire Afghanistan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former caretaker foreign minister Jalil Abbas Jilani, while extending his prayers for the soldiers martyred in the North Waziristan attack, said the army was \u201cfighting the evil forces of terror originating from Afghanistan\u201d. \u201cThis cowardly terror attack will be avenged,\u201d he said in a <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JalilJilani\/status\/1769594040029179937?s=20\">post on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Afghan journalist Bilal Sarwari said the strikes marked a \u201cturbulent page\u201d in Pak-Afghan relations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis marks a turbulent page in the relations between the new Pakistani government and the Afghan Taliban.
