Donald Trump told a rally in Ohio on Saturday that November\u2019s presidential election will be the \u201cmost important date\u201d in US history, painting his campaign for the White House as a turning point for the country.<\/p>\n
Days after securing his position as the presumptive Republican nominee, the former president also warned of a \u201cbloodbath\u201d if he is not elected \u2014 though it was not clear what he was referring to, with the remark coming in the middle of comments about threats to the US auto industry.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe date \u2014 remember this, November 5 \u2014 I believe it\u2019s going to be the most important date in the history of our country,\u201d the 77-year-old told rally-goers in Vandalia, Ohio, repeating well-worn criticisms that his rival, President Joe Biden, is the \u201cworst\u201d president.<\/p>\n
Criticising what he said were Chinese plans to build cars in Mexico and sell them to Americans, he stated: \u201cWe\u2019re going to put a 100 per cent tariff on every single car that comes across the line, and you\u2019re not going to be able to sell those cars if I get elected.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNow if I don\u2019t get elected it\u2019s going to be a bloodbath for the whole \u2014 that\u2019s going to be the least of it, it\u2019s going to be a bloodbath for the country. That\u2019ll be the least of it. But they\u2019re not going to sell those cars.\u201d<\/p>\n
As Trump\u2019s comment gained traction on social media, Biden\u2019s campaign released a statement calling the Republican a \u201closer\u201d at the ballot box in 2020 who then \u201cdoubles down on his threats of political violence.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe wants another January 6 but the American people are going to give him another electoral defeat this November because they continue to reject his extremism, his affection for violence, and his thirst for revenge,\u201d the campaign said, referring to the deadly attack<\/a> on the US Capitol by Trump supporters in 2021.<\/p>\n Later, Biden spoke at a dinner in Washington, where he also warned of \u201can unprecedented moment in history.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cFreedom is under assault\u2026 The lies about the 2020 election, the plot to overturn it, to embrace the Jan. 6 insurrection pose the greatest threat to our democracy since the American Civil War,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cIn 2020, they failed, but \u2026 the threat remains.\u201d<\/p>\n The 81-year-old, who has waved off concerns that he is too old for a second term, leavened his rhetoric with humour.<\/p>\n \u201cOne candidate\u2019s too old and mentally unfit to be president,\u201d he said of the presidential race. \u201cThe other guy\u2019s me.\u201d<\/p>\n Earlier this month Trump and Biden each won enough delegates to clinch their party nominations in the 2024 presidential race, all but assuring a rematch and setting up one of the longest election campaigns in US history.<\/p>\n Among the issues, Trump is campaigning on is sweeping reform of what he calls Biden\u2019s \u201chorror show\u201d immigration policies, despite the ex-president successfully pressuring Republicans to block a bill in Congress that included the toughest border security measures in decades.<\/p>\n On Saturday he invoked the border again as he reached out to minorities who have traditionally voted Democrat.<\/p>\n He said Biden had \u201crepeatedly stabbed African-American voters in the back\u201d by granting work permits to \u201cmillions\u201d of immigrants, warning that they and Hispanic Americans \u201care going to be the ones that suffer the most.\u201d<\/p>\n For decades Ohio had been seen as a bellwether battleground state, though it has trended more strongly Republican since Trump\u2019s White House win in 2016.<\/p>\n The rally came a day after Trump\u2019s former vice president, Mike Pence, said he would not endorse his old boss for a second White House term.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Donald Trump told a rally in Ohio on Saturday that November\u2019s presidential election will be the \u201cmost important date\u201d in US history, painting his campaign for the White House as a turning point for the country.
