There was a whiff of Hollywood glamour in the air on Monday at St. Anthony\u2019s, a primary school in the Irish city of Cork that counts Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy as a past pupil.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The day after Cillian Murphy won his first Oscar \u2013 Best Actor for his role in Oppenheimer \u2013 staff, parents, and children at his former school were basking in his success.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we woke up this morning there was such a buzz of excitement,\u201d Sean Lyons, principal of the all-boys Catholic school, told AFP.<\/p>\n

The 47-year-old Murphy was a pupil at St. Anthony\u2019s, in the tidy Cork neighbourhood of Ballinlough, between 1982 and 1988.<\/p>\n

He won his first Oscar Sunday for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the US physicist who masterminded the atomic bomb, capping a glittering awards season that saw him snare a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and other prizes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe thought can this be real, that this man from Ballinlough in Cork actually won the Oscar, a global award!\u201d said the beaming bespectacled teacher.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has set the seed now for many students not just here in Ballinlough and St Anthony\u2019s but all around Ireland that they can achieve on the global stage,\u201d said Lyons.<\/p>\n

\u2018Super proud\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n

A \u2018Congratulations\u2019 banner referred to the actor\u2019s recent Golden Globe and BAFTA awards and wished him luck for the Oscars.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat will have to be updated now,\u201d smiled Mary Harrington, a 68-year-old grandmother picking up her grandchild at the school gate.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got up early this morning to make sure he\u2019d won \u2013 I don\u2019t know why I did that as I knew he was going to win,\u201d she laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy brother was in secondary school with Cillian and here as well, and he remembers all the gigs that he played with his music,\u201d said Valerie Ni Cochlain, who was waiting for her child to come out from her school.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell done to Cillian and his family, it\u2019s great news for Cork and Ireland,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Murphy had dipped his toe into acting at both school and university in Cork.<\/p>\n

In 1996, after pestering a local director, Murphy landed a lead part in the frenetic \u2018Disco Pigs\u2019<\/em>, a play written by fellow Corkonian Enda Walsh.<\/p>\n

The stage show was a critical success, going on an 18-month world tour, and proved a launchpad for his career.<\/p>\n

\u201cCork is a small close-knit community, a small city, we\u2019re proud of everybody who achieves success and goes on to achieve great things,\u201d said Elaine Murphy, who is no relation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are super proud and so are the children, it\u2019s a great boost for everybody to be proud of a local,\u201d she said alongside her two smiling children, seven-year-old Liam Eanna, and Holly, aged six.<\/p>\n

Homework-free day<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Displayed inside the school in a questionnaire filled out in 2015, Cillian Murphy advised current students on how to break into acting and film.<\/p>\n

\u201cJoin a theatre group, start making films on our phone with your friends, edit them on your computer and put them on YouTube,\u201d wrote the actor, who now lives in Dublin after returning to Ireland from a decade in London.<\/p>\n

According to the questionnaire, his biggest challenge was \u2018trying to understand the Cork accent\u2019 after moving to Cork as a child from Dublin, some 260 kilometres (160 miles) southwest of the Irish capital.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne regret I have is that I didn\u2019t put money on him getting an Oscar back then,\u201d said Eddie Hogan O\u2019Connell, a staff member who was a classmate of Murphy\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d say the odds would have been great, whereas now he is up there with the best in the world and congratulations to him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

For the children at the school Murphy\u2019s win was reason for a surprise from the teachers: no homework.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe kids are especially happy that the teachers let them off,\u201d said Phil Howard, a grandmother collecting her grandson, Colm.<\/p>\n

\u201cCillian would be happy if he heard that I\u2019m sure,\u201d she laughed.<\/p>\n
