Bitcoin raced to an all-time peak close to $72,000 on Monday as the world\u2019s most popular cryptocurrency won further support on greater trading accessibility and dollar weakness.<\/p>\n
The virtual unit struck $71,829 as dealers also eyed an upcoming industry event that will tighten bitcoin supplies.<\/p>\n
Monday\u2019s spurt extended last week\u2019s record-breaking run when the currency bulldozed its way<\/a> past the previous November 2021 pinnacle of $68,991.<\/p>\n Bitcoin won further support on Monday after Britain\u2019s Financial Conduct Authority watchdog said it would join US regulators by allowing the creation of crypto-related securities.<\/p>\n US authorities earlier this year gave the green light to exchange-traded funds (ETFs) pegged to bitcoin\u2019s spot price, making it easier for mainstream investors to add the unit to their portfolio.<\/p>\n \u201cThis (FCA statement) suggests that crypto is going mainstream, and not just bitcoin but also other established coins,\u201d XTB analyst Kathleen Brooks told AFP<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cWe know that the demand is there, and this comes on the back of $10 billion of inflows into bitcoin ETFs in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n ETFs are widely regarded by commentators as proof of burgeoning crypto interest from institutional investors, further buoying investor enthusiasm.<\/p>\n Bitcoin is created \u2014 or \u201cmined\u201d \u2014 as a reward when powerful computers solve complex problems to validate transactions made on the blockchain.<\/p>\n But the reward given to bitcoin \u201cminers\u201d \u2014 those who contribute to the creation of the blockchain by validating transactions \u2014 is about to be divided in two.<\/p>\n Next month\u2019s so-called \u201chalving\u201d has lent strong support to the unit\u2019s price in recent days and weeks by tightening supplies.<\/p>\n \u201cBitcoin has surged to a fresh all-time high, boosted by strong ETF inflows and ahead of the April halving event,\u201d said City Index analyst Fiona Cincotta.<\/p>\n \u201cThe crypto market has skyrocketed 350 per cent from its 2022 low and shows little sign of stopping after the doors have been opened to institutional investors and as retail investors experience FOMO,\u201d she said in reference to a \u201cfear of missing out\u201d.<\/p>\n Cincotta predicted that $100,000 could become \u201cthe next natural target\u201d but sounded a note of caution.<\/p>\n \u201cBitcoin is extremely volatile and could drop just as quickly as it has risen,\u201d she warned.<\/p>\n Momentum came also from the weaker dollar as Friday\u2019s US jobs data firmed expectations that the Federal Reserve remained on track to start cutting interest rates in June.<\/p>\n At its current price, bitcoin has soared almost 70pc since January, when it stood at about $43,000.<\/p>\n However, it slumped to $15,000 in November 2022 following the collapse of the crypto exchange FTX.<\/p>\n The digital currency has a finite number of units.
