\u201cKung Fu Panda 4\u201d opened at the top of the North American box office this weekend and \u201cDune: Part Two\u201d became the year\u2019s first film to pass the $150 million mark domestically as movie-world glitterati gathered in Hollywood for Sunday\u2019s Oscars ceremony.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cKung Fu Panda 4\u201d, a martial-arts comedy from DreamWorks and Universal, took in an estimated $58.3 million for the Friday-through-Sunday period, according to industry watcher Exhibitor Relations, as Hollywood saw some improving results following a wan start to the year.<\/p>\n

The film\u2019s numbers were good enough \u2014 for part four of an animated series \u2014 to earn it a spot in an \u201celite\u201d group including \u201cToy Story,\u201d \u201cDespicable Me\/Minions,\u201d \u201cIce Age\u201d and \u201cShrek,\u201d said analyst David A. Gross. Jack Black voices panda Po as he battles a shape-shifting enemy.<\/p>\n

Denis Villeneuve\u2019s epic \u201cDune\u201d sequel from Warner Bros. meantime enjoyed a strong second weekend, earning a solid $46 million. That pushed the domestic total for the extravagant sci-fi flick with its lavish cast to $157 million. It has taken in an additional $210 million internationally.<\/p>\n

\u201cImaginary,\u201d a new horror film from Blumhouse Productions and Lionsgate, came in third at $10 million \u2014 not a huge figure, but one nearly equaling its modest production cost, a formula that keeps the horror films coming. DeWanda Wise plays Jessica, who rediscovers her childhood teddy bear Chauncey \u2014 only to learn he\u2019s not nearly as cute and cuddly as she once thought \u2014 certainly no Paddington or Pooh.<\/p>\n

Fourth spot, with $7.6 million, went to Angel Studios\u2019 new faith-based drama \u201cCabrini,\u201d about a Catholic nun in 19th-century New York who clashed with politicians and church officials while trying to care for poverty-stricken immigrants. Cristiana Dell\u2019Anna plays Mother Frances Cabrini, who was canonized long after her death.<\/p>\n

And in fifth place, slipping three spots from last weekend, was Paramount\u2019s biopic \u201cBob Marley: One Love,\u201d at $4.1 million. Kingsley Ben-Adir plays the iconic reggae singer in the surprise box office hit, which has now taken in $89.3 million in North America.<\/p>\n

There was some good news for those gathering in Hollywood: the domestic box office was down just three percent this week from a three-year pre-pandemic average, Gross said \u2014 \u201cgood numbers\u201d after a pallid January and February.<\/p>\n

Rounding out the top 10 were:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cMadame Web\u201d ($1.1 million)<\/p>\n

\u201cMigration\u201d ($1.1 million)<\/p>\n
