ISLAMABAD \u2013 Like other parts of the globe, International Women\u2019s Day was observed in Pakistan on Friday to recognize the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Like the previous years, seminars, walks and exhibitions showcasing works of womenfolk were arranged by various public sector and private institutions to mark the day.<\/p>\n

The theme of Women\u2019s Day this year was \u201cinvest in women,\u201d to accelerate progress.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the nation\u2019s ambitions to catch up with the modern world, women in Pakistan continue to face obstacles in rural areas, starting from limited access to education and healthcare to societal constraints on their mobility and decision-making at large.<\/span><\/p>\n

These struggles were particularly evident in marginalized areas like Tharparkar, where women were once confined to domestic roles while men dominated public life. However, the Thar Foundation, a CSR wing of Thar Block II entities, actively addresses these inequalities by promoting gender equality and inclusivity, focusing on education, healthcare, and economic empowerment to empower women and create a more equitable society promoting inclusivity. To deploy this agenda, the Foundation has adopted the United Nation\u2019s (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) where 13 priority areas out of 17 have been adopted for our direct intervention.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aligned with Social Development Goal 5 (SDG 5), which addresses gender inequality, is one of the primary components of Thar Foundation\u2019s mission as it not only stands on its merit but also has a ripple effect on other SDGs, thereby fostering inclusivity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thari women are breaking barriers, taking ownership of roles once dominated by males, not merely to prove equal abilities but to showcase their exceptional capabilities. Numerous beneficiaries are leading this transformative charge, contributing significantly to revolutionizing their region.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sonia\u2019s journey began in her hometown of Sukkur, where she embarked on her career as a lecturer. The familiarity of Sukkur and the proximity of her job to her home provided her with a comfortable start. However, driven by a deep-seated desire to make a difference, her aspirations transcended the boundaries of her immediate surroundings when she came across an opportunity at SECMC to work with rural children in Tharparkar.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her journey began with a simple yet profound realization: the urgent need to extend educational opportunities beyond the confines of traditional classrooms, particularly to children in remote areas.<\/span> She dedicated herself to creating opportunities for girls in their communities, advocating tirelessly for their right to education in a society where gender disparities often hindered progress.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Thar Foundation school has an enrollment of around 5000 students, with a remarkable 35% being girls\u2014a significant achievement in a region where educational access, especially for girls, has historically been limited.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sonia\u2019s initiatives have not only increased enrollment but have also empowered local female teachers, providing them with leadership roles and inspiring the next generation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The journey of Rani Kohli, a farmer who became a skilled dumper driver in SECMC, exemplifies the impact of training and employment opportunities for women. Despite doubts and scepticism, Rani\u2019s success not only benefits her family but also earns her respect in the community. <\/span><\/p>\n

Encouraged by her brother, residing in Mithi, Rani seized the chance and promptly applied for the training and recruitment programs. Upon completing the arduous training in the role of a dumper driver, Rani emerged as a proficient driver, entrusted with the responsibility of ferrying coal from the mining site to the power plant in Thar Coal Block II. <\/span><\/p>\n

She now stands as a beacon of inspiration for other women, exemplifying that with determination and opportunity, the realm of possibilities is boundless.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teju Bheel is a resilient mother of eight children residing in Islamkot whose journey from a farmer to an empowered solar panel cleaner is a testament to her strength and determination.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the past, Teju grappled with the daily challenge of lighting the stove at home, as her income from farming fell short of supporting her large family. However, her life took a significant turn for the better when she secured a job as a solar panel cleaner at the Thar Coal Block II project.<\/span><\/p>\n

Embracing this opportunity, Teju now earns a substantial income, empowering her to single-handedly support her household. Teju\u2019s unwavering dedication to providing a better future for her children is palpable in her actions.<\/span><\/p>\n
