{"id":67285,"date":"2024-03-04T14:08:04","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T14:08:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/pti-calls-for-ecps-resignation-after-reserved-seats-verdict\/"},"modified":"2024-03-04T14:08:04","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T14:08:04","slug":"pti-calls-for-ecps-resignation-after-reserved-seats-verdict","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/pti-calls-for-ecps-resignation-after-reserved-seats-verdict\/","title":{"rendered":"PTI calls for ECP\u2019s resignation after reserved seats verdict"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>ISLAMABAD: Following the rejection of Sunni Ittehad Council\u2019s (SIC) plea seeking allocation of reserved seats, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Ali Zafar has demanded the resignation of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), ARY News reported on Monday. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking on floor of Senate, the PTI Senator also sought proceedings against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja under Article 6 (treason) of the Constitution and said PTI had prepared a resolution in this regard and would be presented soon.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"PTI senators demands resignation of ECP officials including Chief ECP\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/stOeH05GMeU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey [ECP] cannot stay in this position for a minute longer,\u201d he said, adding that the election commission had once again violated the Constitution through this verdict.<\/p>\n<p>During the Senate session today, Ali Zafar said that termed the ECP\u2019s verdict on SIC reserved seats \u201cthe last dagger in the heart of democracy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf our share is being given to other parties then this is a constitutional mistake that the ECP has committed,\u201d he said, claiming that today\u2019s verdict had proven that ECP failed to fulfil its responsibility of holding free and fair elections.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that the presidential and Senate elections could not be conducted in an \u201cincomplete house\u201d. \u201cUntil the national and provincial assemblies are complete, elections can\u2019t be held for these constitutional positions.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Read More: <a href=\"https:\/\/arynews.tv\/sunni-ittehad-council-pti-request-for-reserved-seats-rejected\/\">ECP announces decision on Sunni Ittehad Counci\u2019s reserved seats<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ali Zafar further said that they had asked the electoral watchdog to announce the verdict before prime minister\u2019s election while terming the latter \u2018an unconstitutional move\u2019. \u00a0\u201cWe have decided to challenge the ECP decision,\u201d he announced.<\/p>\n<p>The ECP ruled that PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) was not eligible for the reserved seats allotted to women and minorities. A five-member bench \u2014 headed by CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja \u2014 announced the split decision with a 4-1 majority.<\/p>\n<p>In the verdict, the ECP said the SIC is not entitled to claim quota for reserved seats due to having \u201cnon curable legal defects and violation of a mandatory provision of submission of party list for reserved seats which is the requirement of law\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe seats in the National Assembly shall not remain vacant and will be allotted by proportional representation process of political parties on the basis of seats won by
