The three were later remanded in custody.<\/p>\n<p>The Spanish woman and her husband were also in court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to ensure strict punishment,\u201d Kherwar said, the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency reported Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Kherwar said a special team including forensic officers had been formed to scour the scene of the attack, while another team was hunting more suspects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are constantly raiding places,\u201d Kherwar said in PTI\u2019s report. \u201cWe will soon arrest the remaining accused.\u201d An average of nearly 90 rapes a day were reported in India in 2022, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau.<\/p>\n<p>However, large numbers go unreported due to prevailing stigmas around victims and a lack of faith in police investigations.<\/p>\n<p>Convictions remain rare, with cases getting stuck for years in India\u2019s clogged-up criminal justice system.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1726310\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The notorious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1042043\">gang rape and murder<\/a> of an Indian student made global headlines in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, was raped, assaulted and left for dead by five men and a teenager on a bus in New Delhi in December that year.<\/p>\n<p>The horrific crime shone an international spotlight on India\u2019s high levels of sexual violence and sparked weeks of protests, and eventually a change in the law to introduce the death penalty for rape.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three Indian men have appeared in court after the gang rape of a Spanish tourist on a motorbike trip with her husband, with police hunting four other suspects, reports have said.
