{"id":66675,"date":"2024-03-02T19:48:31","date_gmt":"2024-03-02T19:48:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/foreign-office-dismisses-us-directions-on-probing-election-rigging\/"},"modified":"2024-03-02T19:48:31","modified_gmt":"2024-03-02T19:48:31","slug":"foreign-office-dismisses-us-directions-on-probing-election-rigging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/foreign-office-dismisses-us-directions-on-probing-election-rigging\/","title":{"rendered":"Foreign Office dismisses US \u2018directions\u2019 on probing election rigging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>ISLAMABAD: Pakis\u00adtan has dismissed the United States\u2019 suggestion to probe electoral discrepancies, emphasising that it will not succumb to external dictates.<\/p>\n<p>In her weekly press bri\u00adefing on Friday, Foreign Office spokes\u00adperson Mum\u00adtaz Zahra Baloch categorically stated that no country can give directions to Pakistan, which is an independent and sovereign country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe in our own sovereign right to make decisions about Pakistan\u2019s internal affairs,\u201d Ms Bal\u00adoch said while replying to the comments made by her US counterpart reg\u00adarding allegations of misconduct in the elections held on February 8.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1818191\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Earlier this week, US State Department spoke\u00adsperson Matt\u00adhew Miller <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=1155469142501365\">said<\/a> any claims of interference or fraud \u201cshould be fully and transparently investigated in accordance with Pakis\u00adtan\u2019s own laws and procedures\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On another occasion, he said, \u201cWith respect to inv\u00adestigations into reported irregularities, we want to see those investigations proceed \u2026 [and] wrapped up as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The comments were prompted by accusations \u2014 particularly by PTI-backed candidates \u2014 of tampering with and manipulation of election results announced after an unprecedented delay by the Elec\u00adtion Commission of Pakistan (ECP).<\/p>\n<p>The ECP and the caretaker government have strongly refuted the accusations, urging political parties to pursue legal remedies for their complaints through courts and other appropriate channels.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Miller isn\u2019t the only US official to express concerns over the polls. Around 35 Congress members, led by Democratic Party\u2019s Gregorio Casar, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1818191\/us-lawmakers-urge-biden-not-to-recognise-new-pakistan-govt\">written a letter<\/a> to President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken urging not to acknowledge the new government in Islamabad formed after the election.<\/p>\n<p>While replying to a question about the letter, Ms Baloch said, \u201cThis is a communication between public officials in the US and is not addressed to the government of Pakistan. We therefore have no comments to offer on such letters,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Baloch said Pakistan is a \u201cdynamic democracy\u201d and possesses the necessary domestic frameworks to address any issues related to elections or democratic processes. The spokesperson also refrained from commenting on a letter written to the International Monetary Fund by PTI to link any future financial support with the audit of the election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you know, the prime minister has made a statement on this matter.
