The US has urged Pakistan to \u201ccontinue working with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other global financial institutions\u201d to achieve economic stability in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States supports Pakistan\u2019s efforts to break free from the vicious cycle of debt and financing,\u201d State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told his daily news briefing on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The spokesperson was responding to a question about a letter sent by ex-PTI\u2019s chairman Imran Khan to the IMF, suggesting to link the next loan facility to an audit of the Feb 8 general elections in the country.<\/p>\n

The PTI in its letter had called on the global lender to ensure that its guidelines regarding \u201cgood governance as well as conditionalities\u201d were satisfied before granting a financial facility to Pakistan.<\/p>\n

The party also demanded an election audit of \u201cat least 30 per cent of the national and provincial assemblies\u2019 seats\u201d, which the party said could be accomplished in \u201cmerely two weeks\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cPakistan\u2019s new government must immediately prioritise the economic situation because the policies over the next several months will be crucial to maintaining economic stability for Pakistanis,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll just say with respect to the IMF that we support Pakistan\u2019s efforts to break free from the vicious cycle of debt and international financing,\u201d the Spokesperson added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe long-term health of Pakistan\u2019s government \u2013 or economy is crucial to its stability,\u201d Miller added. Pakistan has been facing financial challenges in recent years, with dwindling foreign exchange reserves and declining value of its national currency.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Members of the US Congress have called on the Biden administration to \u201cwithhold recognition of a new government until an investigation determines the election was not rigged\u201d.<\/p>\n

A letter spearheaded by US Congressman Greg Casar and signed by 30 other members of Congress expresses concern about \u201cpre- and post-poll rigging\u201d in the Feb 8 general elections.<\/p>\n

The letter asks Biden to urge \u201cPakistani authorities to release anyone who has been detained for engaging in political speech or activity\u201d. It further stated to \u201cmake clear to Pakistani authorities that US law provides for accountability for acts that violate human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe results of Pakistan\u2019s election should represent the will of the people,\u201d Casar wrote in a post on X.<\/p>\n
