LOS ANGELES: Historical epic \u201cOppenheimer\u201d picked up more prizes on Saturday at Hollywood\u2019s Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, bolstering the movie\u2019s chances to score the best picture trophy at next month\u2019s Oscars.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The film about the race to build the first atomic bomb took the top honor \u2013 best movie cast \u2013 handed out by members of the SAG-AFTRA actors union at a red-carpet ceremony in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

Cillian Murphy, who played scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, won best movie actor, and co-star Robert Downey Jr. best supporting actor.<\/p>\n

Irish actor Murphy said he took up the profession after trying to make a career as a musician and often felt like an \u201cinterloper.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is extremely special to me because it comes from you guys,\u201d Murphy told his fellow actors as he accepted his award.<\/p>\n

SAG-AFTRA\u2019s choices are closely watched because actors form the largest group of voters for the Academy Awards, the film industry\u2019s top prizes.<\/p>\n

At the moment \u201cOppenheimer\u201d appears unstoppable. Director Christopher Nolan\u2019s drama already has claimed trophies at the Golden Globes, the British Academy Film Awards and other ceremonies. Honors from Producers Guild of America, another key predictor of Oscars success, will be announced on Sunday.<\/p>\n

In other SAG accolades, the best actress trophy went to Lily Gladstone, star of \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon.\u201d Gladstone played a member of the Osage Native American community that suffered a string of murders in 1920s Oklahoma over their oil-rich land.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy friends, fellow actors, I feel the good in what you have done,\u201d Gladstone said. \u201cWe bring empathy into a world that so much needs it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Da\u2019Vine Joy Randolph won supporting actress for playing a grieving mother in \u201cThe Holdovers.\u201d \u201cHow lucky are we to get to do what we do. I wake up every day overwhelmed with gratitude to be a working actor,\u201d Randolph said.<\/p>\n

The awards streamed live on Netflix (NFLX.O), opens new tab for the first time, part of the company\u2019s efforts to expand its live programming.<\/p>\n

SAG-AFTRA staged a four-month strike against Hollywood studios last year to fight for higher pay and protections from artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is especially meaningful to be here with us all together again, for this occasion, after going though a very difficult time with the strike,\u201d actor Idris Elba said in opening remarks.<\/p>\n

In television categories, FX restaurant dramedy \u201cThe Bear\u201d claimed best cast in a TV comedy and acting honors for stars Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am so honored to be in this community,\u201d White said. \u201cI wanted to be part of this my whole life. I had no backup plan.\u201d<\/p>\n

HBO\u2019s \u201cSuccession\u201d secured best TV drama cast for its final season about the battle for control of a family\u2019s media dynasty.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth Debicki, who played Princess Diana in Netflix series \u201cThe Crown,\u201d won best TV drama actress. \u201cThe Last of Us\u201d star Pedro Pascal was named best actor in a TV drama and appeared stunned when he walked on stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a little drunk,\u201d Pascal said as he held his trophy. \u201cI thought I could get drunk\u2026 I\u2019m making a fool of myself. Thank you so much!\u201d<\/p>\n

SAG-AFTRA also handed out a lifetime achievement honor to Barbra Streisand, the award-winning actor, producer, director, singer and writer.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
