{"id":63997,"date":"2024-02-24T18:56:05","date_gmt":"2024-02-24T18:56:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/navalnys-tortured-body-handed-over-to-his-mother\/"},"modified":"2024-02-24T18:56:05","modified_gmt":"2024-02-24T18:56:05","slug":"navalnys-tortured-body-handed-over-to-his-mother","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/navalnys-tortured-body-handed-over-to-his-mother\/","title":{"rendered":"Navalny\u2019s \u2018tortured\u2019 body handed over to his mother"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>The body of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1814737\">died unexpectedly<\/a> in prison nine days ago, was handed over to his mother on Saturday in the remote Arctic city of Salekhard, his spokeswoman said.<\/p>\n<p>In a video recorded before the release of the body, Navalny\u2019s widow Yulia Navalnaya accused \u201cdemonic\u201d Russian President Vladimir Putin of \u201ctorturing\u201d the corpse of a political opponent.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full  w-full  media--stretch  media--embed  \">\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"\u0424\u0430\u043b\u044c\u0448\u0438\u0432\u0430\u044f \u0432\u0435\u0440\u0430 \u041f\u0443\u0442\u0438\u043d\u0430\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EKSwdJwEmrE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Navalny\u2019s allies urged supporters \u201cnot to relax\u201d and his spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, wrote on X there was no certainty that Russian authorities would let the relatives hold a funeral \u201cthe way the family wants and the way Alexei deserves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her six-minute video published on YouTube, Navalnaya said she would continue the fight against Putin\u2019s regime, questioned the president\u2019s faith and accused him of holding her husband\u2019s body \u201chostage\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Navalny\u2019s mother Lyudmila <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1816705\/navalny-family-under-pressure-to-agree-upon-secret-funeral\">said<\/a> that Russian investigators were refusing to release his body from a morgue in Salekhard until she agreed to lay him to rest without a public funeral.<\/p>\n<p>She said an official had told her that she should agree to their demands, as Navalny\u2019s body was already decomposing.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Navalny\u2019s aides said authorities had threatened to bury him in the remote prison colony where he died unless his family agreed to their conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Since returning to the Russian presidency in 2012, Putin has positioned himself as a defender of traditional, conservative values against what he portrays as corrosive Western liberalism.<\/p>\n<p>He has also trumpeted his closeness to Russia\u2019s Orthodox Church, regularly appearing at services around religious festivals and speaking of his personal faith.<\/p>\n<p>Navalnaya said her husband had been a devout Christian, who attended church and had fasted for Lent even while in prison.
