NEW DELHI: India\u2019s foreign ministry conceded on Friday that some of the country\u2019s citizens had signed up for \u201csupport jobs\u201d with the Russian army and said it was working with Moscow to secure their discharge.<\/p>\n
The Hindu<\/em> newspaper had reported on Wednesday that 18 Indians were stranded in various border towns along Russia\u2019s frontier with Ukraine.<\/p>\n Three had been \u201cforced\u201d to fight alongside the Russians, the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n The foreign ministry did not confirm that Indians had taken combat roles in the conflict.<\/p>\n But it said in a statement that it was \u201caware that a few Indian nationals have signed up for support jobs with the Russian army\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Indian Embassy has regularly taken up this matter with the relevant Russian authorities for their early discharge,\u201d the statement.<\/p>\n The Hindu\u2019s<\/em> report alleged that Indians had been conned by Dubai-based recruiters with promises of high wages and a Russian passport.<\/p>\n Upon arriving in Moscow, the Indians were reportedly trained to handle \u201carms and ammunition by the Russian army\u201d and shipped to the frontlines last month.<\/p>\n Published in Dawn, February 24th, 2024<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" NEW DELHI: India\u2019s foreign ministry conceded on Friday that some of the country\u2019s citizens had signed up for \u201csupport jobs\u201d with the Russian army and said it was working with Moscow to secure their discharge.
