{"id":63262,"date":"2024-02-22T21:21:37","date_gmt":"2024-02-22T21:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/landslides-halt-traffic-on-karakoram-highway-baltistan-road\/"},"modified":"2024-02-22T21:21:37","modified_gmt":"2024-02-22T21:21:37","slug":"landslides-halt-traffic-on-karakoram-highway-baltistan-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/landslides-halt-traffic-on-karakoram-highway-baltistan-road\/","title":{"rendered":"Landslides halt traffic on Karakoram Highway, Baltistan Road"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>GILGIT: The Karako\u00adram Highway (KKH) and Baltistan Road have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1815766\/karakoram-highway-blocked-for-third-day-as-heavy-rains-lash-gb-kp\">once again<\/a> been shut down due to landslides triggered by heavy snowfall and rain.<\/p>\n<p>The closures, announced on Wednesday, follow brief periods of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1815902\/karakoram-highway-partially-reopened-as-snow-landslides-disrupt-life-in-gb\">restoration<\/a> for light traffic earlier in the week, aggravating the challenges faced by both residents and tourists due to adverse weather.<\/p>\n<p>An official of the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Mana\u00adgement Authority told <em>Dawn<\/em> the region\u2019s weather was improving, but the damage from Monday and Tuesday\u2019s severe weather events has led to significant disruptions.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1814557\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The KKH was obstruc\u00adted at several points near the Thore area of Chilas and the Diamer Basha Dam construction site, officials told <em>Dawn<\/em>. As a result, thousands of passengers were stranded once again on both sides of the highway.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to mitigate the impact include diverting light traffic through the old KKH route. Mean\u00adwhile, clearance operations are actively ongoing using heavy machinery.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote-level-1\">\n<p>Closures leave passengers stranded; residents brave power outages<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Similarly, the Baltistan Road witnessed its fourth consecutive day of closure, with partial openings being short-lived due to new landslides near the Roundu area of Skardu, severing land communication for the residents once more.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these challenges, GBDMA Director General Safdar Khan assured that traffic restoration efforts were in full swing across the affected areas, with no significant casualties or damage reported thus far.<\/p>\n<p>The GB government has issued a weather alert effective until Feb 27, advising people to avoid non-essential travel.
