Recently retired judge of the Lahore High Court (LHC) Shahid Jameel Khan said on Thursday that his resignation was a “rebellion against this system, that some people have now made\u00a0hostage for their vested interests”.<\/p>\n

In his first public appearance,\u00a0at a lawyer\u2019s convention, after he handed in his resignation earlier this month, Justice Shahid said, \u201cSome people have captured the system and wish to run it as per their whims.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said\u00a0Pakistan was going through critical instability, but even today “some judges are working under fear,” he said. “The fear of losing their jobs, and making their chief unhappy,” the former judge said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBreak the chains; let\u00a0go of\u00a0the fear,\u201d Justice (retd) Khan urged.\u00a0“We will not\u00a0be able to stand as one nation if we will not shrug off our fear,”\u00a0he added.<\/p>\n

Refuting rumors of resigning under someone\u2019s pressure, the judge clarified that the decision to resign was solely his own, and was taken after careful consideration about\u00a0what was good for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy resignation is an example for those who make decisions under pressure,” he said. “Don\u2019t compromise your self-respect; a judge should make decisions after keeping aside all kinds of pressures, interests, and fear,\u201d the ex-LHC judge added.<\/p>\n

Responding to a query regarding “the establishment” approaching him. The retired judge\u00a0said that he had “only twice been approached by\u00a0them”.\u00a0Once after his confirmation as a judge when “a lawyer approached me to convey a\u00a0‘zoo official’s’ message regarding wanting to meet me”. “I was told the official was really ‘impressed’ by me,” the judge said, adding that he refused the meeting offer.<\/p>\n

The second time, he said, was when “a car chased me during the time I was\u00a0hearing some matters related to cantonment elections in Rawalpindi,” he said.<\/p>\n

Justice Shahid claimed that he was informed that the car chase\u00a0was a warning for him. “Although they did not accept responsibility,\u00a0everyone knows who they were,\u201d the judge said.<\/p>\n

Justice Shahid’s resignation<\/strong><\/p>\n

On February 2, Justice Shahid tendered his resignation<\/a>\u00a0from his office, citing \u201cpersonal circumstances\u201d in which he had decided to \u201cturn the page and start a new chapter\u201d.<\/p>\n

In his resignation letter, sent to President Dr Arif Alvi, he stated, \u201cIt was an absolute honour to hold the office, but for personal circumstances I have decided to turn the page and start a new chapter.”<\/p>\n

His resignation marked\u00a0the third such departure within a month during Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa’s tenure.<\/p>\n

Justice Shahid,\u00a0who remained part of\u00a0the LHC bench since 2014, decided to step down, adding to the recent exits of Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, both SC judges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
