{"id":62428,"date":"2024-02-20T17:36:57","date_gmt":"2024-02-20T17:36:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/more-than-half-the-world-faces-high-measles-risk-who\/"},"modified":"2024-02-20T17:36:57","modified_gmt":"2024-02-20T17:36:57","slug":"more-than-half-the-world-faces-high-measles-risk-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/more-than-half-the-world-faces-high-measles-risk-who\/","title":{"rendered":"More than half the world faces high measles risk: WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>More than half the world\u2019s countries will be at high or very high risk of measles outbreaks by the end of the year unless urgent preventative measures are taken, the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1813483\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Measles cases have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1812890\">increasing<\/a> across most regions mainly due to missed vaccinations during the Covid-19 years when health systems were overwhelmed and fell behind on routine vaccinations for preventable diseases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are worried about is this year, 2024, we\u2019ve got these big gaps in our immunisation programmes and if we don\u2019t fill them really quickly with the vaccine, measles will just jump into that gap,\u201d the WHO\u2019s Natasha Crowcroft, a senior technical adviser on Measles and Rubella, told a Geneva press briefing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can see, from data that\u2019s produced with WHO data by the CDC (US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention), that more than half of all the countries in the world are going to be at high or very high risk of outbreaks by the end of this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She called for urgent action to protect children, saying there was a \u201clack of commitment\u201d by governments given competing issues like economic crises and conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Measles is a highly contagious, airborne virus that mostly affects children under five years old. It can be prevented by two doses of vaccine and more than 50 million deaths have been averted since 2000, according to the WHO.<\/p>\n<p>Cases last year were already up 79 per cent to over 300,000, according to WHO data, thought to represent just a fraction of the total.<\/p>\n<p>Outbreaks have been reported in all WHO regions except for the Americas although Crowcroft warned that these were to be expected.<\/p>\n<p>Death rates are higher in poorer countries due to weaker health systems, Crowcroft said, adding that outbreaks and deaths were also a risk for middle and high-income countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had many measles outbreaks around the world and middle-income countries really suffered.
