{"id":61480,"date":"2024-02-18T08:13:04","date_gmt":"2024-02-18T08:13:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/china-to-step-up-patrols-near-taiwan-after-2-killed-in-deadly-boat-incident\/"},"modified":"2024-02-18T08:13:04","modified_gmt":"2024-02-18T08:13:04","slug":"china-to-step-up-patrols-near-taiwan-after-2-killed-in-deadly-boat-incident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/china-to-step-up-patrols-near-taiwan-after-2-killed-in-deadly-boat-incident\/","title":{"rendered":"China to step up patrols near Taiwan after 2 killed in deadly boat incident"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>China on Sunday said it would step up law enforcement patrols in waters near Taiwan after two Chinese nationals died in a boat incident involving Taiwan\u2019s coast guard.<\/p>\n<p>A Chinese boat was carrying four people when it capsized on Wednesday near the Kinmen islands while pursued by the Taiwanese coast guard.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1805773\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>All four on board were thrown into the water and two of the crew later died.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese coast guard said it would \u201ccarry out regular law enforcement patrol operations\u201d in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The patrols are intended to \u201cfurther maintain the order of operations in relevant waters and protect the safety of fishermen\u2019s lives,\u201d Gan Yu, a spokesperson for the Chinese coast guard, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>China has condemned democratic Taiwan for the incident and urged the island to release the two surviving members of the boat crew, who were detained.<\/p>\n<p>Taipei in turn blamed Beijing, saying the boat was \u201cwithin prohibited waters\u201d around the Kinmen islands \u2014 a territory administered by Taiwan but located just five kilometres from China\u2019s city of Xiamen.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s incident comes against a backdrop of heightened tensions across the Taiwan Strait.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has vowed to one day bring the self-ruled island under its control.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1804678\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Taiwan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1805524\">presidential<\/a> election, held in January, was won by the Democratic Progressive Party\u2019s Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing considers a \u201cseparatist\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese President Xi Jinping has in recent years ramped up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1802265\">rhetoric<\/a> for the \u201cunification\u201d of Taiwan with China.<\/p>\n<p>And Beijing has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1703215\">stepped up<\/a> its military presence near Taiwan, deploying warplanes and naval vessels around the island on a nearly daily basis.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China on Sunday said it would step up law enforcement patrols in waters near Taiwan after two Chinese nationals died in a boat incident involving Taiwan\u2019s coast guard.
