Pakistan-Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI) leader and senior supreme court lawyer, Salman Akram Raja, was arrested in Lahore on Saturday while staging a protest against alleged poll rigging.<\/p>\n
When being whisked away by the police, Raja was heard saying to reporters, \u201cThey are arresting me unlawfully. I am with the public and we will continue to raise my voice for the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n
The PTI termed the act \u201cextremely shameful and disgusting\u201d, calling for his immediate release.<\/p>\n
The party also shared a video on its official X account of the Punjab police taking the lawyer into custody.<\/p>\n
Following the development, Taimur Saleem Khan Jhagra, another PTI leader, deemed the arrest \u201cshameful\u201d, adding that \u201cthese are now desperate attempts to hide the falsification of results\u201d.<\/p>\n
Historian and politician, Ammar Ali Jan, termed the arrest as \u201cbankruptcy\u201d of the \u201cdeep state\u201d.<\/p>\n
Former Senator, Afrasiab Khattak, condemned the arrest of the senior PTI leader, adding that \u201cpeaceful protest against rigging is a fundamental right of every citizen. Such actions can\u2019t silence the people\u2019s protest\u201d.<\/p>\n
Political analyst Mosharraf Zaidi questioned the grounds of the arrest, asking why an advocate of the Constitution and democracy was \u201cneedlessly dragged to a police van\u201d.<\/p>\n
Public policy researcher and politician, Ammar Rashid, called it \u201ccalculated madness\u201d which seemed like a push for violence and overt intervention.<\/p>\n
Dawn<\/em> correspondent Atika Rehman called the arrest as well as scuffles with female protestors \u201cridiculous and badly handled\u201d.<\/p>\n Barrister Khadija Siddiqi condemned the \u201cabhorrent and fascist tactics against political workers\u201d and demanded Raja\u2019s immediate release.<\/p>\n PTI lawyer Mashal Yousafzai said the police\u2019s conduct was \u201cshameful\u201d, and urged the chief justice to take notice.<\/p>\n Barrister and Dawn columnist Asad Rahim Khan recalled Raja\u2019s legal services, and called for everyone to \u201craise your voice now\u201d.<\/p>\n Barrister Ayesha Munir also wondered why Raja was arrested for merely \u201cprotesting against rigging\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Urge CJP to take notice, demand his immediate release.
