{"id":61056,"date":"2024-02-17T05:15:06","date_gmt":"2024-02-17T05:15:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/trump-fined-355m-barred-from-new-york-business-in-fraud-trial\/"},"modified":"2024-02-17T05:15:06","modified_gmt":"2024-02-17T05:15:06","slug":"trump-fined-355m-barred-from-new-york-business-in-fraud-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/trump-fined-355m-barred-from-new-york-business-in-fraud-trial\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump fined $355m, barred from New York business in fraud trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>NEW YORK: A judge ruled on Friday that Donald Trump must pay $354.9 million in penalties for fraudulently overstating his net worth to dupe lenders, handing the former US president another legal setback in a civil case that imperils his real estate empire.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Arthur Engoron also banned Trump from serving as an officer or director of any New York corporation for three years.<\/p>\n<p>Engoron cancelled his prior ruling from September ordering the \u201cdissolution\u201d of companies that control pillars of Trump\u2019s real estate empire, saying on Friday that this was no longer necessary because he is appointing an independent monitor and compliance director to oversee Trump\u2019s businesses.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1814060\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In the ruling, Engoron wrote that Trump and the other defendants in the case \u201care incapable of admitting the error of their ways\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir complete lack of contrition and remorse borders on pathological,\u201d Engoron wrote. \u201cInstead, they adopt a \u2018See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil\u2019 posture that the evidence belies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James accused Trump and his family businesses of overstating his net worth by as much $3.6 billion a year over a decade to fool bankers into giving him better loan terms. Trump\u2019s lawyer Alina Habba said in a statement that the ruling was a \u201cmanifest injustice\u201d and \u201cculmination of a multi-year, politically fuelled witch hunt\u201d against him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not just about Donald Trump \u2014 if this decision stands, it will serve as a signal to every single American that New York is no longer open for business,\u201d Habba said, adding that she plans to appeal.<\/p>\n<p>Trump and his adult sons, Donald Jr and Eric, were defendants in the case. Donald Jr and Eric Trump were each ordered by the judge to pay $4m.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has denied wrongdoing and called the case a political vendetta by James, an elected Democrat. Trump is expected to appeal Friday\u2019s ruling by Engoron.<\/p>\n<p>The civil fraud case could deal a major blow to Trump\u2019s real estate empire as the businessman-turned-politician leads the race for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden in the Nov 5 election.
