{"id":60878,"date":"2024-02-16T17:03:04","date_gmt":"2024-02-16T17:03:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/role-in-imrans-ouster-fazl-retracts-allegation-against-gen-faiz-says-ex-spymasters-name-uttered-by-mistake\/"},"modified":"2024-02-16T17:03:04","modified_gmt":"2024-02-16T17:03:04","slug":"role-in-imrans-ouster-fazl-retracts-allegation-against-gen-faiz-says-ex-spymasters-name-uttered-by-mistake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/role-in-imrans-ouster-fazl-retracts-allegation-against-gen-faiz-says-ex-spymasters-name-uttered-by-mistake\/","title":{"rendered":"Role in Imran\u2019s ouster: Fazl retracts allegation against Gen Faiz, says ex-spymaster\u2019s name uttered by mistake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman on Friday clarified his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1814484\/gen-faiz-gen-bajwa-orchestrated-no-confidence-move-against-imran-claims-fazl\">remarks<\/a> regarding the role of former Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed \u2014 the then-Peshawar corps commander \u2014 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1684168\">no-confidence vote<\/a> against former prime minister Imran Khan and the PTI government, saying that he had mistakenly uttered the ex-spy master\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan had seen for the first time in its history the ouster of a prime minister through a vote of no-confidence (VONC), the efforts for which were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1674532\">led by<\/a> the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), an alliance of parties led by the PML-N.<\/p>\n<p>For its part, the PTI had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1682104\">accused<\/a> the PDM of colluding with the US and hatching a regime change conspiracy to topple Imran\u2019s government and blamed the military, which was led by Bajwa at the time, for letting the then-dispensation in Islamabad go ahead with the alleged conspiracy. The US has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1721444\">repeatedly<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1698101\">denied<\/a> any interference.<\/p>\n<p>A day ago in a tell-all interview on <em>Samaa TV<\/em> programme <em>Nadeem Malik Live<\/em>, the JUI-F chief had elaborated on the events of the no-confidence vote, and said: \u201cThey (Gen Bajwa and Gen Faiz) were in contact with all political parties regarding the no-confidence motion and they told us the way of going about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGen Faiz had come to me and he asked me to go ahead [with the no-confidence vote], but only within the system, but not out of the system. Though I refused it,\u201d he had added.<\/p>\n<p>It must be mentioned that Gen (retd) Faiz was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1650461\">replaced<\/a> as the ISI director-general by Lieutenant General Nadeem Ahmed Anjum in October 2021, and posted as the Peshawar corps commander when the PTI government was ousted.<\/p>\n<p>Fazl\u2019s remarks had triggered a flurry in political circles, with his former allies in the PDM-led government as well as the PTI both passing comments on the allegations.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier today, a <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenews.com.pk\/print\/1158102-overline-campaign-against-imran-headline-bajwa-faiz-reject-fazl-s-claim-no-trust-motion-launched-at-their-behest\">report<\/a> by <em>The News<\/em> said that sources close to the former generals had \u201ccategorically denied\u201d Fazl\u2019s allegations. \u201cThe source, quoting Gen Bajwa, said the former army chief is willing to deny Maulana\u2019s statement under oath and expects the same from Maulana to get to the truth,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Questioned about the matter and the alleged responses from the generals in a fresh interview on <em>GTV news<\/em> programme <em>G for Gharidah<\/em>, Fazl acknowledged that \u201cit is correct to this extent that I mistakenly uttered Gen Faiz\u2019s name and he was not [involved in the no-confidence incident] \u2026 there is no doubt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He further said that he considered the former generals and \u201ctheir whole regime\u201d responsible for the alleged rigging in the 2018 general elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of further debate, this should be relegated to history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said when the two generals were alerted about political, economic and defence instability during the PTI government, they began approaching politicians to \u201cstabilise the situation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Fazl said the establishment had always had a role in the country\u2019s politics \u2014 a practice he said should end.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full  w-full  media--stretch  media--embed  \">\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"\ud83d\udd34 LIVE | Exclusive Interview with Maulana Fazal ur Rehman | G For Gharidah | GTV News\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GcDHktM4tHQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Regarding the challenge \u2014 by sources close to Gen (retd) Bajwa \u2014 to make the allegations under oath, Fazl said it was a waste of time to discuss oaths, especially when \u201cthere is no respect for their [own] oaths among the military.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs there respect for the oath in their ranks \u2026 in the army \u2026 among generals? Don\u2019t they take an oath of not interfering in politics when they are commissioned? Don\u2019t they know they are interfering, have always done so and keep breaking their oath?\u201d questioned the JUI-F chief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat importance will it (repeating the allegation under oath) have in my eyes if the one who asked me of it has always interfered in politics during their job and keeps violating their oath?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he wanted an investigation into the matter, Fazl wondered who would do so, and whether a truth and reconciliation commission could, since he did not have faith in the current situation and institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Elaborating on his allegation of the military\u2019s meddling in political affairs, Fazl said that on March 26, 2022, the PDM parties were given the option that Imran could tender his resignation if they dropped the no-confidence motion against him.<\/p>\n<p>Fazl said before he even joined the meeting, other participants had given their answer that the time for Imran\u2019s resignation had passed.<\/p>\n<p>Questioned about his first purported meeting with retired Gen Bajwa or other military officials on the no-confidence move, the JUI-F chief said he had \u201cmany private meetings\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"gen-bajwa-urged-withdrawal-of-no-confidence-motion-pml-ns-malik-ahmad\" href=\"#gen-bajwa-urged-withdrawal-of-no-confidence-motion-pml-ns-malik-ahmad\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Gen Bajwa urged withdrawal of no-confidence motion: PML-N\u2019s Malik Ahmad<\/h2>\n<p>Earlier today, PML-N leader Malik Ahmad Khan said on Friday that Gen (retd) Bjawa had advised the then-opposition to withdraw the vote of no-confidence.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing a press conference in Lahore, Ahmad said: \u201cThe meeting in which the heads of all political parties were present [\u2026] in that, if he (Fazl) is saying that Gen Bajwa told to bring a VONC \u2014 I am presenting the incident that unfolded before me \u2014 in fact he (Bajwa) was saying to not bring a VONC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe (Bajwa) was Imran\u2019s representative, which I also objected to and asked \u2018what is the [army] chief saying\u2019,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1744819\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Ahmad specified the meeting was held on March 26, 2022, at the \u201cB-Mess near the Punjab House\u201d. Recalling that Gen Bajwa had \u201ccome and urged us to withdraw the VONC so they could proceed towards elections\u201d, he wondered how it \u201cconnected\u201d to the recent claim made by Fazl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Maulana have any one person who can come forward and tell when he met him (Bajwa)?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>The aide to ex-PM Shehbaz also highlighted that Gen retd) Faiz was not even present during the meeting as he was \u201cprobably serving as a corps commander somewhere at that time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he (Fazl) submit the VONC on someone\u2019s advice? Absolutely not, as Maulana was involved in its filing, the manner of its filing and the political discussion held,\u201d Ahmad claimed. \u201cI wonder why he felt the need to say this today,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The PML-N leader said he thought of the meeting as Gen Bajwa \u201cbringing his [Imran\u2019s] message\u201d, emphasising that Fazl \u201ctook a firm stand\u201d at that time  by asking: \u201cGen <em>sahib<\/em>, how can you tell us to withdraw [the VONC]?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahmad further wondered why Gen Bajwa was allegedly advising the then-opposition to withdraw the
