{"id":59944,"date":"2024-02-14T10:41:05","date_gmt":"2024-02-14T10:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/lhc-grants-bail-to-parvez-elahi-in-illegal-appointment-case\/"},"modified":"2024-02-14T10:41:05","modified_gmt":"2024-02-14T10:41:05","slug":"lhc-grants-bail-to-parvez-elahi-in-illegal-appointment-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/lhc-grants-bail-to-parvez-elahi-in-illegal-appointment-case\/","title":{"rendered":"LHC grants bail to Parvez Elahi in illegal appointment case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday granted PTI President Parvez Elahi bail in a case pertaining to an alleged illegal appointment made in the Punjab Assembly during his recent stint as the chief minister.<\/p>\n<p>Initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1757308\/pti-president-chaudhry-pervaiz-elahi-arrested-outside-lahore-residence\">taken into custody<\/a> on June 1 last year, the former Punjab CM has faced a series of releases and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1774173\">re-arrests<\/a>, and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1807152\">remained in detention<\/a> ever since. The legal challenges coincided with the state\u2019s crackdown on the PTI that followed the violent May 9 protests that saw important government and military installations vandalised.<\/p>\n<p>The case at hand pertains to the alleged illegal appointment of Muhammad Khan Bhatti as the principal secretary to the chief minister during Elahi\u2019s tenure as the Punjab CM.<\/p>\n<p>However, Elahi is not expected to be released as he is still under arrest in other cases.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1757526\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Today, Justice Shehram Sarwar Chaudhary presided over the hearing while Advocate Amir Saeed Rawn and Farman Munis appeared as Elahi\u2019s counsels.<\/p>\n<p>During the hearing, Rawn informed the court that a judicial magistrate had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1787619\">discharged<\/a> Bhatti from the case.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that the notification for Bhatti\u2019s appointment as the principal secretary had been issued by the Punjab chief secretary before Elahi assumed the role of the CM.<\/p>\n<p>Rawn said that the provincial chief secretary had not been made a respondent in the case, adding that the case was filed on a \u201cpolitical basis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, the court granted Elahi bail against surety bonds worth Rs100,000.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"the-case\" href=\"#the-case\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>The case<\/h2>\n<p>Elahi was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1757833\/respite-for-yasmin-rashid-but-liberty-eludes-parvez-elahi\">initially arrested<\/a> in the case of recruitments to the Punjab Assembly on June 3 last year. The case pertained to illegal recruitments of 12 Grade-17 officers in the provincial assembly, with Elahi being accused of getting the results of the testing service changed to select the candidates of his choice.<\/p>\n<p>He was then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1776558\">arrested<\/a> on September 18 in the case of allegedly illegally appointing Bhatti, following which a Lahore court sent him on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1776735\">judicial remand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In October, a Lahore district and sessions court had granted police Elahi\u2019s two-day <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1783893\">physical remand<\/a> in the case. Days later, the Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1784498\">informed<\/a> the court that it had allegedly recovered Rs4.1 million from the ex-CM\u2019s house in the case.<\/p>\n<p>The next month, a judicial magistrate had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1787619\">discharged<\/a> Bhatti in the case but he remained in jail as he was on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1791156#:~:text=is%20also%20on-,judicial%20remand,-in%20various%20cases\">judicial remand<\/a> in other corruption cases.
