{"id":59854,"date":"2024-02-14T04:44:07","date_gmt":"2024-02-14T04:44:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/firing-on-home-of-sikh-activist-in-canada\/"},"modified":"2024-02-14T04:44:07","modified_gmt":"2024-02-14T04:44:07","slug":"firing-on-home-of-sikh-activist-in-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/firing-on-home-of-sikh-activist-in-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Firing on home of Sikh activist in Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>OTTAWA: Shots appear to have been fired at the Canadian home of a Sikh separatist activist, police said on Monday, following recent allegations by Ottawa and Washington that Indian dissidents living abroad in both countries have been targeted for assassination.<\/p>\n<p>Constable Tyler Bell-Morena said Peel Regional Police were alerted by construction crews about what appeared to be \u201ca bullet hole in a window of the home\u201d of Inderjit Singh Gosal in the province of Ontario, and are investigating.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1797432\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Gosal is also a close associate of prominent Sikh separatist leader Gur\u00adpatwant Singh Pan\u00adnun, an American Sikh activist in New York whom US authorities say was the target of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1791573\">thwarted assassination plot<\/a> in the US last year.<\/p>\n<p>There were no injuries in the shooting as the Brampton, Ontario, home is under construction and currently unoccupied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand who this person is and his affiliations, but it\u2019s just too early for us to speculate that there\u2019s any connection\u201d to other violence and threats, the police official said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are obviously investigating it with all avenues in mind,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Pannun, writing on social media, called the incident a \u201cdrive-by shooting\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in September directly linked New Delhi to the killing of another Sikh separatist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar.<\/p>\n<p>After Trudeau went public with his allegations, India denied the charges and responded furiously, briefly curbing visas for Canadians and forcing Ottawa to withdraw diplomats.<\/p>\n<p>Canada also suspended negotiations for a free-trade deal with India.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, a group of people shot at the British Columbia home of Simranjeet Singh, an associate of Nijjar.
