LOS ANGELES: \u201cOppenheimer\u201d was named the best film of the year by Hollywood\u2019s directors on Saturday, boosting expectations that Christopher Nolan\u2019s long wait for success at the Oscars could soon be over.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The British director \u2014 who is renowned for making commercially successful, complex blockbusters, but has not always received love from awards voters \u2014 won the top prize at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea that my peers would think I deserve this means everything to me,\u201d said Nolan, of his film about the invention of the atomic bomb.<\/p>\n

Nolan had been nominated four times previously for the top accolade from the DGA, but had failed to win for \u201cMemento,\u201d \u201cThe Dark Knight,\u201d \u201cInception\u201d or \u201cDunkirk.\u201d<\/p>\n

He will now be hoping he can break a similar losing streak next month at the Oscars, where he has lost all five of his previous nods.<\/p>\n

Nolan lavished praise on his filmmaking team for bringing his hugely ambitious visions \u2014 including a jaw-dropping replica of the first atomic bomb test \u2014 to life over the course of his career.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople say, \u2018Christopher Nolan destroyed a real plane\u2019 and \u2018Christopher Nolan blew up a building,\u2019 or whatever,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry, chaps! It\u2019s all down to you and your teams. And you were never more on your game than making \u2018Oppenheimer.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Eighteen of the past 20 DGA winners have gone on to also win the Oscar for best director that same year. This year\u2019s Academy Awards take place on March 10.<\/p>\n

The other directors nominated by the DGA for its top prize this year were Martin Scorsese (\u201cKillers of the Flower Moon\u201d), Greta Gerwig (\u201cBarbie\u201d), Yorgos Lanthimos (\u201cPoor Things\u201d) and Alexander Payne (\u201cThe Holdovers\u201d).<\/p>\n

Nolan will go head-to-head with Scorsese and Lanthimos again at the Oscars, but notably not Gerwig, whose apparent snubbing by the Academy as director of blockbuster feminist satire \u201cBarbie\u201d caused outrage.<\/p>\n

Gerwig did not address the Oscars controversy Saturday, saying only that recognition \u201cin the company of my heroes\u201d at the DGA gala meant \u201cmore to me than I can ever say.\u201d<\/p>\n

Comment on that was left to Jonah Hill, who walked on stage and earnestly began: \u201cBefore we begin, it would be irresponsible not to acknowledge the recent tragedies.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, I\u2019m referring to the fact that \u2018Barbie\u2019 only got eight Academy Award nominations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The DGA prize for best movie from a first-time filmmaker went to another Oscar best picture nominee \u2014 Celine Song\u2019s \u201cPast Lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Best documentary went to \u201c20 Days in Mariupol,\u201d which portrayed in harrowing detail the arrival of war to a Ukrainian city that became one of the Russian invasion\u2019s bloodiest battle sites \u2014 all captured by video journalists under siege.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, my hometown was bombed and seven people got killed, three of who are children. So, it is a sad day,\u201d said director Mstyslav Chernov.<\/p>\n

\u201cCinema not just leaves these stories in history for next generations\u2026 it also helps us all to cope with a sometimes unbearable world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The DGA Awards also honor television. \u201cThe Last of Us\u201d won the prize for best drama series episode, and \u201cThe Bear\u201d won in comedy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
