{"id":56224,"date":"2024-02-04T14:44:40","date_gmt":"2024-02-04T14:44:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/10-politicians-who-have-switched-loyalties-a-time-too-many\/"},"modified":"2024-02-04T14:44:40","modified_gmt":"2024-02-04T14:44:40","slug":"10-politicians-who-have-switched-loyalties-a-time-too-many","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/10-politicians-who-have-switched-loyalties-a-time-too-many\/","title":{"rendered":"10 politicians who have switched loyalties a time too many"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><em>Dawn.com<\/em> looks at candidates contesting the February 8 polls who have switched parties at least three times since 2008.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>In the highly volatile and ever evolving world of Pakistani politics, it is not unheard of for politicians to switch allegiance.<\/p>\n<p>The friends of yesterday can be foes today before giving friendship another shot some time tomorrow \u2014 if the politics of it all makes sense.<\/p>\n<p>In the list below, we have identified 10 such politicians who have switched their parties multiple times over their careers, just to give themselves a better chance of having electoral success.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"faisal-saleh-hayat\" href=\"#faisal-saleh-hayat\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Faisal Saleh Hayat<\/h2>\n<p><strong>PPP \u27a1 PML-Q \u27a1  PPP \u27a1  PML-N<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Faisal Saleh Hayat speaks to PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif. \u2014 via X\/pmln_org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Brought into politics by former president Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Faisal Saleh Hayat has had a complicated relationship with the PPP, which he first quit during the Musharraf regime.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/794438\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The former interior minister set up his own faction named PPP-Patriots and later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/794438\/the-many-lives-of-faisal-saleh-hayat#:~:text=power%20politics%2C%20he-,joined,-the%20PML%2DQ\">joined<\/a> the PML-Q, returning to the National Assembly in 2008 from NA-88 (Jhang-III).<\/p>\n<p>Hayat then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/794438\/the-many-lives-of-faisal-saleh-hayat#:~:text=for%20himself%20after-,breaking,-up%20with%20his\">quit<\/a> the PML-Q as well before the 2013 polls, opting to contest as an <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/ecp.gov.pk\/storage\/files\/1\/v2.pdf\">independent<\/a> candidate. He went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1307529\">rejoin<\/a> the PPP in 2017 and obtained the party\u2019s ticket for NA-114 (Jhang-I) in the 2018 elections.<\/p>\n<p>However, he will be contesting the upcoming polls from NA-108 (Jhang-I) after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1801119\">switching allegiances<\/a> yet again \u2014 this time to the PML-N.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"firdous-ashiq-awan\" href=\"#firdous-ashiq-awan\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Firdous Ashiq Awan<\/h2>\n<p><strong>PML-Q \u27a1 PPP \u27a1 PTI \u27a1 IPP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Firdous Ashiq Awan. \u2014 via X\/Dr_FirdousAwan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Firdous Ashiq Awan started her political career with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1063852#:~:text=Dr-,Firdous,-Awan%3A%20an%20exception\">PML-Q<\/a> but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/683323\/ashiq-awans-resignation-drama-surprises-many#:~:text=PML%2DQ%20and-,joined,-the%20PPP%20just\">switched<\/a> to the PPP just before the 2008 elections, <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/ecp.gov.pk\/storage\/files\/1\/ge2008-l1.pdf\">contesting<\/a> on the party\u2019s ticket that year as well as in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/802680\">2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1336332\">joined<\/a> the PTI in 2017, competing the 2018 elections on her new party\u2019s ticket but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1425648\">lost<\/a> to PML-N\u2019s Chaudhry Armughan.<\/p>\n<p>In the upcoming polls, the former federal minister will be vying for the NA-70 (Sialkot-I) seat as part of Jahangir Tareen\u2019s newcomer Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP).<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"jamshaid-ahmad-dasti\" href=\"#jamshaid-ahmad-dasti\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Jamshaid Ahmad Dasti<\/h2>\n<p><strong>PPP \u27a1 Independent \u27a1 PARP + PTI<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Jamshaid Ahmad Dasti. \u2014 via X\/@jamshaidAdasti<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Jamshaid Ahmad Dasti was first <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/na.gov.pk\/en\/former-old.php?id=1\">elected<\/a> to the lower house in 2008 on a PPP ticket from NA-178 (Muzaffargarh-III).<\/p>\n<p>The former MNA contested the 2013 polls as an independent candidate, <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/ecp.gov.pk\/storage\/files\/1\/dna.pdf\">emerging victorious<\/a> from Muzaffargarh\u2019s NA-177 and NA-178. He then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1012074\/dasti-also-joins-party-legharis-pledge-allegiance-to-nawaz-league\">joined the PML-N<\/a> soon after the elections but the party leadership <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1686284\">refused<\/a> to accept him, leading to him form his own party named Pakistan Awami Raj Party.<\/p>\n<p>He <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/ecp.gov.pk\/notification-of-returned-candidates-national-assembly\">took part<\/a> in the 2018 elections as his own party\u2019s candidate from NA-182 (Muzaffargarh-III) but lost to PPP\u2019s Mahar Irshad.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1532833\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In March last year, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1743609\/dasti-joins-pti\">merged<\/a> his party with the PTI, and will be contesting the February 8 polls from Muzaffargarh\u2019s NA-175, NA-176, PP-269, and PP-271.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"syed-haroon-ahmed-sultan-bukhari\" href=\"#syed-haroon-ahmed-sultan-bukhari\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Syed Haroon Ahmed Sultan Bukhari<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Independent \u27a1 PML-N \u27a1 PPP \u27a1 JUI-F<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Haroon Sultan Bukhari\u2014 Facebook\/sainharoonbukhari<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>During the 2008 elections, Syed Haroon Ahmed Sultan Bukhari was <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pap.gov.pk\/members\/profile\/en\/19\/808\">elected<\/a> to the Punjab Assembly from PP-258 (Muzaffargarh-VIII) as an independent candidate. He <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pap.gov.pk\/members\/profile\/en\/20\/1098\">returned<\/a> to the seat in the 2013 polls as the PML-N\u2019s candidate from the same constituency.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, the former provincial minister was the party\u2019s candidate from Muzaffargarh\u2019s NA-184 and PP-272.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1417696\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Bukhari <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1606788#:~:text=legislator%5D%20by%20defeating-,PML%2DN%E2%80%99s,-Makhdoom%20Haroon%20Sultan\">remained<\/a> with the PML-N till February 2021, before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1741090\">joining<\/a> the PPP last year.<\/p>\n<p>Now with the Bilawal Bhutto-led partty, Bukhari would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1806119\">contending<\/a> for Muzaffargarh\u2019s NA-177 and PP-272 seats as a candidate of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam\u2014Fazl (JUI-F) in the February 8 polls.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"sarfraz-ahmad-bugti\" href=\"#sarfraz-ahmad-bugti\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Sarfraz Ahmad Bugti<\/h2>\n<p><strong>PML-N \u27a1 BAP \u27a1 PPP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Sarfraz Ahmad Bugti speaks in an interview with Independent Urdu, which was published on Nov 24, 2023. \u2014 Photo courtesy Independent Urdu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Sarfraz Ahmad Bugti has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1380425\">served<\/a> as interior minister for Balochistan after winning the elections in 2013. He had won as an independent candidate but later <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/618381\/finally-complete-balochistan-cabinet-takes-shape-11-ministers-sworn-in\">joined<\/a> the PML-N.<\/p>\n<p>He then joined the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1432616\">elected<\/a> as a senator from Balochistan in September 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Bugti <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1798283\">resigned<\/a> from the role of the caretaker interior minister and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1798894\">joined<\/a> the PPP last month, and will now be the party\u2019s candidate for PB-10 (Dera Bugti).<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"sardar-abdul-rehman-khetran\" href=\"#sardar-abdul-rehman-khetran\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Sardar Abdul Rehman Khetran<\/h2>\n<p><strong>PML-Q \u27a1 JUI-F \u27a1 BAP \u27a1  PML-N<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Sardar Abdul Rehman Khetran. \u2014 via X\/rehman_khetran<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Sardar Abdul Rehman Khetran was part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/291175\/magsi-seeks-post-of-cm-for-third-time#:~:text=Meanwhile%2C-,PML%2DQ,-leader%20Sardar%20Abdur\">PML-Q<\/a> during the 2008 elections. Five years later, he was <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/ecp.gov.pk\/storage\/files\/1\/dba.pdf\">elected<\/a> to the Balochistan Assembly on JUI-F\u2019s ticket.<\/p>\n<p>The former Balochistan minister then went on to contest the 2018 general elections as an independent candidate and after emerging victorious, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1424633\">joined the BAP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Two months ago, he was among two dozen prominent leaders who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1789461\">joined the PML-N<\/a> as party supremo Nawaz Sharif visited Balochistan to woo \u201celectables\u201d in the lead-up to the February 8 polls. He will be the PML-N\u2019s candidate for PB-4 (Musakhel-Barkhan).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1739358\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Khetran was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1738535\/balochistan-minister-khetran-arrested-on-suspicion-of-killing-3-people-police\">arrested<\/a> in February last year on the suspicion of his involvement in a triple murder case after three bodies were recovered from a well near his residence.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"haji-mir-lashkari-raisani\" href=\"#haji-mir-lashkari-raisani\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Haji Mir Lashkari Raisani<\/h2>\n<p><strong>PPP \u27a1 PML-N \u27a1 BNP-M \u27a1 Independent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Haji Mir Lashkari Raisani. \u2014 via Facebook\/NawabzadaHajiMirLashkariRaisani<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Haji Mir Lashkari Raisani, the younger brother of former Balochistan chief minister Nawab Aslam Raisani, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/301377\/committee-set-up-to-trace-missing-people-awan#:~:text=president%20Haji%20Lashkari-,Raisani,-said%20his%20party\">contested<\/a> the 2008 elections as the president of PPP\u2019s Balochistan chapter.<\/p>\n<p>Two months before the 2013 polls, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/790526\/ppps-lashkari-raisani-joins-pml-n\">joined the PML-N<\/a> but <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/ecp.gov.pk\/storage\/files\/1\/dba.pdf\">lost<\/a>. In 2017, Raisani <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1378595\">switched loyalties<\/a> to the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) and <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1_NqWmBUkIpQFH0s1kzaFrFrKjWs6KcTI\/view\">contested<\/a> the 2018 elections from NA-265 (Quetta-II) but again lost.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1024458\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>However, he seems to have distanced himself from the BNP-M last year as he was among a group of \u201cpolitical mavericks\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1738133\">organising seminars<\/a> titled \u2018Re-imagining Pakistan\u2019, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1800190\">reported plans<\/a> to form a new political party.<\/p>\n<p>In the run-up to the upcoming elections, PML-N <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1789740#:~:text=He%20said%20he-,invited,-Lashkari%20Raisani%20to\">invited<\/a> the veteran politician to join the party again but he chose to contest as an independent candidate. According to a <em>Dawn<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1805936#:~:text=the%20party%20is-,supporting,-the%20independent%20Haji\">report<\/a>, the JUI-F is supporting Raisani against Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai in NA-263 (Quetta-II).<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"arbab-ghulam-rahim\" href=\"#arbab-ghulam-rahim\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Arbab Ghulam Rahim<\/h2>\n<p><strong>PML-Q \u27a1 PML-N \u27a1 GDA \u27a1 PTI \u27a1 GDA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Former Sindh CM Arbab Ghulam Rahim \u2014 X\/drarbabrahim<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>During the 2008 polls, Arbab Ghulam Rahim was <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pas.gov.pk\/index.php\/members\/profile\/en\/19\/357\">elected<\/a> to the Sindh Assembly as a PML-Q leader from PS-60 (Tharparkar-I) while in 2013, he was <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pas.gov.pk\/index.php\/members\/profile\/en\/31\/515\">chosen<\/a> as a PML-N lawmaker from the same constituency.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1423124\">2018 elections<\/a>, Rahim\u2019s Peoples Muslims League (PML) contested as part of the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA). Later, he was seen close to the PTI \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1468381\">attending its gatherings<\/a> and being a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1540008\">joint candidate<\/a> of the GDA and PTI in March 2020 by-elections.<\/p>\n<p>He then formally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1637508\">joined<\/a> the PTI in July 2021 and became the prime minister\u2019s special assistant on Sindh affairs. The ex-CM went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1643628\/arbab-rahims-pml-merges-into-pti\">merge<\/a> his PML into the PTI. However, in the aftermath of the May 9 riots, he left the party.<\/p>\n<p>Rahim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1797617\">joined the GDA<\/a> last month and will be <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1180jUyjseE7qp_BDQu3QqUJtvoW_nAqz\">participating<\/a> in the February 8 polls as the party\u2019s candidate from NA-215 (Tharparkar-II). He will also be <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/10mQqxrwEktHQA0McSG7EbxwNqWXohWma\">vying for<\/a> a seat in the provincial assembly as an independent candidate from PS-55 (Tharparkar-IV).<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"syed-hafeezuddin\" href=\"#syed-hafeezuddin\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Syed Hafeezuddin<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Independent \u27a1 PTI \u27a1 PSP + MQM-P<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Syed Hafeezuddin. \u2014 Courtesy: Syed Hafeezuddin\u2019s Facebook page<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Syed Hafeezuddin <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/ecp.gov.pk\/storage\/files\/1\/ge2008-cc3.pdf\">contested<\/a> the 2008 general elections from PS-90 (Karachi-II) as an independent candidate but remained unsuccessful.<\/p>\n<p>In the next elections, Hafeezuddin <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/ecp.gov.pk\/storage\/files\/1\/dsa.pdf\">emerged<\/a> as the PTI\u2019s winning candidate from PS-93 (Karachi-V). In 2016, former Karachi mayor Mustafa Kamal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1253726\">pulled<\/a> the legislator into his freshly launched Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP).
