{"id":56182,"date":"2024-02-04T11:45:06","date_gmt":"2024-02-04T11:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/russias-deputy-fm-visits-seoul-after-diplomatic-row-over-north-korea-comments\/"},"modified":"2024-02-04T11:45:06","modified_gmt":"2024-02-04T11:45:06","slug":"russias-deputy-fm-visits-seoul-after-diplomatic-row-over-north-korea-comments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/russias-deputy-fm-visits-seoul-after-diplomatic-row-over-north-korea-comments\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia\u2019s deputy FM visits Seoul after diplomatic row over North Korea comments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Russia\u2019s deputy foreign minister Andrey Rudenko visited South Korea to discuss the Ukrainian war and bilateral ties, Seoul\u2019s foreign ministry said on Sunday, as the two countries trade increasingly heated rhetoric over the nuclear-armed North.<\/p>\n<p>Rudenko, Russia\u2019s deputy foreign minister handling Asia-Pacific affairs, met his South Korean counterpart Chung Byung-won on Friday, Seoul\u2019s foreign ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Chung expressed Seoul\u2019s \u201cgrave position\u201d on Moscow\u2019s growing military cooperation with Pyongyang and urged Russia to take \u201cresponsible actions\u201d, the statement said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1807115\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>His visit came the day after Moscow\u2019s foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that heightened tension on the Korean peninsula was \u201cprimarily due to the brazen policy of the United States and its allies, including the Republic of Korea and Japan\u201d, referring to South Korea by its official name.<\/p>\n<p>Zakharova made the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1810976\/s-korea-summons-russian-envoy-over-rude-remarks\">remarks<\/a> when asked about South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol\u2019s recent description of North Korea as the only country in the world that has legislated the preemptive use of nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Calling Yoon\u2019s remarks \u201cblatantly biased\u201d, she also said Seoul \u201cdoesn\u2019t seem to realise that the United States\u2019 leading position is irrevocably becoming a thing of the past\u201d, and that the South \u201cmay turn out to be no more than a small bargaining chip in Washington\u2019s geopolitical games\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Seoul\u2019s foreign ministry summoned Russian Ambassador Georgy Zinoviev on Saturday to protest the \u201crude, ignorant\u201d comments.<\/p>\n<p>Since invading Ukraine in 2022, Russia has forged closer ties with Pyongyang, which South Korea and Washington accuse of shipping weapons to Moscow to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1788030\">help<\/a> the war effort.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1782281\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>North Korea this year declared the South its \u201cprincipal enemy\u201d and threatened war over \u201ceven 0.001 millimetres\u201d of territorial infringement.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts have recently warned that North Korea could be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1810603\">testing<\/a> cruise missiles ahead of sending them to Russia for use in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Kim made a rare trip to Russia in September to meet President Vladimir Putin, who is set to pay a visit to Pyongyang in return.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Russia\u2019s deputy foreign minister Andrey Rudenko visited South Korea to discuss the Ukrainian war and bilateral ties, Seoul\u2019s foreign ministry said on Sunday, as the two countries trade increasingly heated rhetoric over the nuclear-armed North.
