The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday summoned an urgent meeting of security officials following the assassination of a National Assembly independent candidate in Bajaur district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and the killing of an ANP activist in Balochistan\u2019s Qilla Abdullah.<\/p>\n

A sudden spurt in violence — just eight days before the general elections — also saw a grenade attack on the election campaign office of PPP candidate, Ali Madad Jatak, on Quetta\u2019s Sariab Road. A similar grenade attack was carried out at the residence of another PPP candidate, Mir Zahoor Buledi, in Kech district of Balochistan.<\/p>\n

A day earlier, a bomb blast on a main road in Balochistan\u2019s Sibi during an election rally led by Saddam Tareen, a PTI-affiliated independent candidate for NA-253 (Ziarat) constituency, leaving at least four people dead and five others injured.<\/p>\n

The ECP told the media in Islamabad that it would meet with government and intelligence officials on Thursday (today) to discuss the worsening law and order situation in the two provinces.<\/p>\n

In K-P, Rehan Zeb, an independent for NA-8 constituency, was shot dead by unknown assailants, while campaigning in Bajaur district\u2019s Siddiqabad Phattak Bazar at around noon time, according to the local po- lice. Zeb was among four people injured in the shooting. He suffered bullet wounds to his head and neck. He was rushed to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Khar in a serious condition, where he succumbed to his injuries.<\/p>\n

Zeb sought to contest the election with the PTI\u2019s support, but the party decided to support an- other candidate.<\/p>\n

However, Zeb decided to contest the elections as an independent candidate. After the incident, elections for NA-8 and the provincial assembly constituency of PK-22 have been postponed.<\/p>\n

In Balochistan, violent attacks continued to mar the elections campaigns in various parts of the province.<\/span> One<\/span> person<\/span> was<\/span> killed and five others sustained injuries in three firing and grenade attacks, the police and party officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n

An<\/span> ANP<\/span> activist,<\/span> identified<\/span> as<\/span> Zahoor<\/span> Ahmed,<\/span> was<\/span> killed<\/span> and<\/span> another<\/span> injured<\/span> when<\/span> armed <\/span>men<\/span> opened<\/span> fire<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> Maizai<\/span> Addah<\/span> in<\/span> Qilla<\/span> Abdullah<\/span> district.<\/span> The injured were rushed to a <\/span>hospital,<\/span> where the<\/span> ANP activist breathed<\/span> his<\/span> last.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ANP Balochistan condemned the incident and demanded that the government should arrest the culprits.<\/span><\/p>\n

In<\/span> another<\/span> incident,<\/span> unknown<\/span> miscreants<\/span> lobbed<\/span> a<\/span> hand<\/span> gre<\/span>nade<\/span> at<\/span> the<\/span> election<\/span> office<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> PPP on Sariab Road in Quetta, injuring five people. According to police, Ali Madad Jatak, the PPP candidate for the provincial <\/span>assembly<\/span> seat<\/span> in<\/span> Quetta,<\/span> was<\/span> not<\/span> present<\/span> at<\/span> the<\/span> office<\/span> at<\/span> the<\/span> time<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> attack.<\/span> In<\/span> a<\/span> third<\/span> untow<\/span>ard<\/span> incident,<\/span> miscreants<\/span> lobbed<\/span> a<\/span> hand<\/span> grenade<\/span> at<\/span> the<\/span> residence<\/span> of<\/span> Mir<\/span> Zahoor<\/span> Buledi,<\/span> the<\/span> PPP\u2019s<\/span> candidate<\/span> for<\/span> a<\/span> provincial<\/span> assembly seat in district Kech.<\/span><\/p>\n

However,<\/span> there<\/span> was<\/span> no<\/span> report<\/span> of<\/span> any<\/span> loss<\/span> of<\/span> lives.<\/span> The<\/span> attackers<\/span> escaped from the spot.<\/span><\/p>\n
