{"id":54862,"date":"2024-02-01T02:13:06","date_gmt":"2024-02-01T02:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/indian-navy-rescues-19-pakistanis-from-somali-pirates\/"},"modified":"2024-02-01T02:13:06","modified_gmt":"2024-02-01T02:13:06","slug":"indian-navy-rescues-19-pakistanis-from-somali-pirates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/indian-navy-rescues-19-pakistanis-from-somali-pirates\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian navy rescues 19 Pakistanis from Somali pirates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>NEW DELHI: India\u2019s navy said on Tuesday it had freed an Iranian fishing vessel hijacked by Somali pirates, the second in as many days, after the latest attack on Indian Ocean shipping.<\/p>\n<p>The warship INS Sumitra \u201ccompelled the safe release\u201d of the 19 Pakistani crew members and the Iranian-flagged Al Naeemi fishing vessel, the spokesman said.<\/p>\n<p>A total of \u201c11 Somali pirates\u201d had taken the crew hostage, the navy said.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs released by the navy showed Somali pirates wielding AK-47 rifles standing on the boat, and another with a navy helicopter hovering overhead.<\/p>\n<p>Further photographs showed commandos boarding the fishing boat in the dark, then standing with rifles over a group of pirates, the men kneeling at their feet with their hands tied behind their backs on the ship\u2019s deck.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote-level-1\">\n<p>Frees Iranian fishing vessel hijacked by 11 pirates who took the crew hostage<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The rescue took place overnight Monday off the Somali coast, some 850 nautical miles (1,574 kilometres) west of the Indian city of Kochi.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1809561\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>It came just 36 hours after India said its forces had freed 17 crew members of the Iranian-flagged Iman fishing vessel, also taken by Somali pirates.<\/p>\n<p>In a third case, commandos from the Seych\u00adelles on Monday freed the Sri Lankan fishing vessel Lorenzo Putha-4 and safely rescued its six-man crew.<\/p>\n<p>That boat had been hijacked three days earlier by Somali gunmen about 840 nautical miles (1,555 kilometres) southeast of Mogadishu, the capital of impoverished and war-ravaged Somalia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Motherships\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The hijackings off Somalia have fuelled concerns about a resurgence of Indian Ocean raids by opportunistic pirates, coming on top of a separate surge in attacks launched by Yemen\u2019s Houthi fighters.<\/p>\n<p>Houthis have launched scores of attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden targeting Israeli-linked vessels in response to Israel\u2019s war in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>International naval forces have been diverted north from the Gulf of Aden into the Red Sea, sparking fears that pirates will exploit the security gap, with the first successful case of Somali piracy since 2017 recorded in December.<\/p>\n<p>Pirate attacks off the Somali coast peaked in 2011 \u2014 with gunmen launching attacks as far as 3,655km from the Somali coast.<\/p>\n<p>Somali pirates previously would use high-powered open skiffs to seize fishing vessels they could then use as \u201cmotherships\u201d to travel far further into the Indian Ocean to attack larger ships.<\/p>\n<p>As well as rescuing the crew and freeing the boats, India said its operations were preventing \u201cmisuse of fishing vessels as motherships for further acts of piracy\u201d on larger merchant vessels.<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s navy has been deployed continuously off Somalia since 2008, but in December sent a far larger force \u2014 including three guided-missile destroyers and P-8I reconnaissance aircraft to \u201cmaintain a deterrent presence\u201d after a string of shipping attacks.<\/p>\n<p>India, which has close trade ties with Iran, has not joined the US-led maritime task force in the Red Sea to protect international shipping against attacks by Houthis.<\/p>\n<p>After releasing one injured sailor into the care of the Indian navy, the pirates took the MV Ruen and its remaining 17 crew members to Somalia\u2019s semi-autonomous state of Puntland.<\/p>\n<p><em>Published in Dawn, January 31st, 2024<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEW DELHI: India\u2019s navy said on Tuesday it had freed an Iranian fishing vessel hijacked by Somali pirates, the second in as many days, after the latest attack on Indian Ocean shipping.
