The company\u2019s goal is to assist people with disabilities by allowing them to operate electronic devices using their brains.<\/p>\n<p>Revealed as Neuralink\u2019s first product, called \u201cTelepathy,\u201d Musk explained that it enables control of phones, computers, and almost any device through mere thoughts. The initial users are expected to be individuals who have lost the use of their limbs, potentially revolutionizing communication and interaction for people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Neuralink\u2019s Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface (PRIME) Study, launched last September, aims to assess the safety of the N1 brain implant and the R1 surgical robot designed for implantation. The study involves placing ultra-fine and flexible threads in the brain\u2019s movement control region, with the N1 Implant transmitting signals wirelessly to an app that decodes movement intentions.<\/p>\n<p>However, Neuralink has faced controversies in its development journey. A Wired report in September detailed torturous conditions endured by monkeys used in experiments, contradicting Musk\u2019s earlier claims that none had died due to the company\u2019s implants. The company has also faced investigations by the U.S. government for potential violations of animal welfare laws, raising concerns about the rushed timelines and the impact on live subjects.<\/p>\n<p>While Neuralink has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to proceed with human trials, there remains reasonable apprehension about the company\u2019s history with live subjects.
