Sinner calls for new champions after historic win"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<figure class=\"featuredimg\">\n <\/p>\n<p class=\"captionimg\">Jannik Sinner posing with Norman Brookes Challenge Cup after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the Aussie Open final<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Sinner said tennis needs new champs after a historic Aussie Open win.<\/li>\n<li>22-year-old Italian claimed his first Grand Slam title.<\/li>\n<li>He became the youngest Melbourne champion since Djokovic in 2008.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jannik Sinner, the Australian Open 2024 winner, thinks that tennis requires a new crop of champions.<\/p>\n<p>The Italian, who is 22 years old, secured his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev in five sets and became the first champion at Melbourne Park in a decade who was not Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer \u2014 the three players who have ruled tennis for 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Djokovic has maintained his excellence in his mid-thirties which has postponed the fall of the \u201cBig Three\u201d but with Federer already retired and Nadal likely to follow him this year, there is room for others to rise to the top of the sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s quite unpredictable what\u2019s coming in the future but still it\u2019s nice to be part of this generation,\u201d Sinner said as he posed with his trophy in Melbourne\u2019s Botanical Gardens on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the next generation is something that this sport needs and it\u2019s also a little bit of a game-changer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sinner was the youngest Australian Open men\u2019s singles winner since Djokovic won the first of his 10 Melbourne Park titles in 2008 and even though he beat the 24-times Grand Slam champion in the semi-finals, the Italian did not make any comparisons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is a different league,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m just happy I have this trophy for this year and then we see what\u2019s coming. There is still a lot of work to do but I will enjoy my process and then we see what I can achieve in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sinner, known for his crisp hitting, also showed his calm attitude on court on Sunday as he survived an early attack from Medvedev before making a huge comeback from two sets down to win the title.<\/p>\n<p>Although he collapsed to the Rod Laver Arena court after the final point, there was no big display of emotions as Sinner celebrated the biggest victory of his career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were so many emotions in my head and the hard work and the sacrifices I\u2019ve done throughout my career,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSharing this moment with my team was maybe the best feeling I\u2019ve had until now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great emotions, I was just happy, yesterday I still maybe couldn\u2019t believe and now I\u2019m starting to realise it, so it\u2019s a great feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Norman Brookes Challenge Cup<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jannik Sinner posing with Norman Brookes Challenge Cup after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the Aussie Open final Sinner said tennis needs new champs after a historic Aussie Open win. 22-year-old Italian claimed his first Grand Slam title.
