Several media outlets on Thursday ran reports about the death of former National Assembly speaker Illahi Bux Soomro. According to a member of Soomro\u2019s family, the reports are false.<\/p>\n

Soomro is a prominent political figure who served as the National Assembly speaker from 1997<\/a> to 2001.<\/p>\n

According to fact-checking platform iVerify Pakistan, state-run APP<\/em> published<\/a> a report titled \u201cPM condoles over demise or [sic]<\/em> ex-NA Speaker Elahi Bux Soomro\u201d.<\/p>\n

Dunya News<\/em> published<\/a> a news report on its website with the title \u201cFormer NA speaker Elahi Bakhsh Soomro passes away\u201d.<\/p>\n

Similar reports were also published by GNN<\/a><\/em> and UrduPoint<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

However, a member of Soomro\u2019s family reached out to the platform\u2019s media partner Dawn<\/em> and confirmed that the reports were incorrect and the ex-NA speaker was alive.<\/p>\n

The iVerify platform further found that some media outlets, such as Samaa News<\/em>, Business Recorder<\/em> and state-run Radio Pakistan<\/em>, which had initially published the news, had taken down their stories.<\/p>\n

Performing a keyword search for these outlets with Soomro\u2019s full name showed links and stories about Soomro\u2019s death but clicking on the links showed empty pages.<\/p>\n

The iVerify Pakistan platform thus concluded that news of Soomro\u2019s passing as run by numerous media outlets, including state-run agencies, was false.<\/p>\n\n
