Renowned toy company\u00a0Mattel\u00a0is embarking on its latest toy-inspired film project, \u2018Bob the Builder<\/em>,\u2019 the brand\u2019s first animated theatrical movie.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The movie stars\u00a0\u2018In the Heights<\/em>\u2018\u00a0actor Anthony Ramos as the voice of Roberto, \u201cBob,\u201d who travels to Puerto Rico for a major construction job. There, he tackles various issues around the island and learns the true meaning of building as he experiences Caribbean-Latin culture.<\/p>\n

Mattel has tapped Colombian-American writer Felipe Vargas to develop the story in collaboration with Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico of the animation studio ShadowMachine.<\/p>\n

\u2018Bob the Builder<\/em>\u2018 is the latest in a number of film and television projects Mattel announced following the success of the Warner Bros\u00a0\u2018Barbie\u2019<\/em> movie,\u00a0which had box office sales that earned over $1.4 billion.<\/p>\n

Other upcoming projects include the Netflix animated series \u2018Masters of the Universe: Revolution<\/em>,\u2019 centered on Mattel\u2019s \u2018He-Man<\/em>\u2018 franchise, and a live-action \u2018Polly Pocket<\/em>\u2018 film, directed by \u2018Girls<\/em>\u2018 creator Lena Dunham and based on the tiny 1980\u2019s dolls by Mattel.<\/p>\n

Mattel Films is also developing projects based on other popular toy lines, including \u2018American Girl<\/em>,\u2019 \u2018Hot Wheels<\/em>,\u2019 \u2018Magic Ball<\/em>,\u2019 \u2018Barney<\/em>\u2018 and more.<\/p>\n

The \u2018Bob the Builder<\/em>\u2018 movie is based on the early 2000\u2019s British animated children\u2019s series of the same name created by \u2018PAW Patrol<\/em>\u2018 writer Keith Chapman for Hit Entertainment and Hot Animation. The television show, centred on the namesake contractor and his friends, ran for 12 seasons.<\/p>\n

Mattel purchased Hit, which owned the rights to \u2018Bob the Builder<\/em>,\u2019 \u2018Thomas & Friends<\/em>\u2018 and other preschool properties, in 2011 for $680 million.<\/p>\n

Robbie Brenner, president of Mattel Films, said in a statement she hoped the project would introduce the character to new audiences.<\/p>\n
